I was reading my Facebook page this morning, and one of my friends had posted a picture of an old carousel horse, and said that they were being unloaded in Sandpoint, Idaho, which is the small town where i grew up. I quickly searched online and found the story behind the carousel, which is almost 100 years old, and has been stored in an old trailer of the same age since the 1950's. The carousel was intended to be a traveling one, as opposed to some that are designed to be set up in one place and not moved around. The trailer they were stored in had a special "stall" where each horse was kept during transport. The estimated age of the carousel is that it was made in the 1920's and traveled around the country until the early 1950's, when the trailers were parked in Kansas out in the pasture of a sheep rancher. For years afterwards, the old carousel and horses remained there in the pasture, forgotten, until they were sold as part of an auction of Americana memorabilia. Even then, they spent another 16 years in storage in New York, during which time, some of the old carousel horses were restored, or at least on their way to being restored. Now, they have been transported, vintage trailer and all, to Sandpoint, which has a beautiful city beach on the banks of the Pend Orville Lake. Here, complete restoration will begin, and eventually, the carousel will be set up as a unique feature of the Sandpoint beach and city park there. This article has the interesting story of the carousel, and pictures of the horses, some stripped of paint, and some already restored, and even a picture of the carousel as it looked back in the 1950's when it was traveling the country. http://www.krem.com/news/local/bonn...nveil-antique-carousel-in-sandpoint/362251837
Oh that is really special @Yvonne Smith and I hope they will get it restored and the town will find a special place to set it up and let all the little and "big" kids ride those carousel horses. That was always one of my favorite rides when I was young.
I adore the Carousel and the music ! I hope it will be restored I saw a handmade Carousel for sale a few years back, it was stunning - if it had been smaller I would have bought it need a large room to house it ..............
Yabut, it's being run by a steam engine. That makes the organ music ok. That carousel is a beauty. Thanks for posting it.
From the time my mom took me to the first carnival, and I rode on the merry-go-round, it has always been my favorite ride. I loved the sound of the calliope music, and naturally, after that I also loved the sound of organ music. In Spokane, Washington, our nearest large city (comparatively speaking) , was Natatorium Park. Sometimes, my mom would take us there after a day spent shopping in Spokane, and they had a big oldtime carousel, one of the Looff carousels that was made early in the 1900's. This video shows some of how Nat Park looked back in the early days, and how the carousel looked back then. I loved riding the outside horses and trying for the gold ring as we swept past it. Now, it has a permanent home in the Spokane Riverfront Park, which was developed for the World's Fair that was held there.
Agree with Ike, Carousel organ music is different and fine Joe - that Carousel I wanted, was around 3 feet across - a sight to behold it was
