My wife went to Alaska at 18, out of high school, alone, never flew before, to be with her new husband, in the Army, stationed there. They routinely drove 100 miles one-way to get McDonalds burgers! Frank
The only chain restaurants we have in Millinocket is McDonalds and Subway and I have never been to the Subway and rarely go to McDonalds. Once in awhile, the McDonalds breakfast seems like a good idea, but that's about it. Five Guys, on the other hand, is worth driving for but, of course, I still wouldn't drive sixty miles to go to Five Guys. However, we need to go into Bangor for one thing or another at least a few times a month anyhow.
@Ken Anderson Not certain my wife drove all those miles only to "burger up", but their location was remote, Delta Junction, I think it was. Anyhow, when McDonalds was still in it's infancy, my high school buddies & I frequently took a special drive over to the closest one in my hometown. We alternated driving duties, as I was older than two of them, Russ & Ted, and George was a year younger than I, being perhaps 21 then. George drove a '56 Chrysler Imperial, completely embellished with those power windows, etc. His turn, one night, after playing poker at my house late, then of course someone said "McDonalds", we headed over to McDonalds, only about a mile and a half away, and pulling into the lot, we encountered a cop, on foot. One reason or another, he followed George's car, and George stopped without pulling into a space. Russ, front passenger, powers down window. Cop leans in, smelling, George (the driver), instantly rolls Russ' window up, squeezing cop's cap's visor off his head, caught by the window! Then guns it to leave the parking lot. Cop in background shaking fist, George scared as hell, Russ laughing as hard as he could, Charlie, always seriously nervous, ready to go berserk, George exits south onto Maple Ave, depressing Russ' side window, dropping the cop's cap out and away. No retribution, no cops chasing us. We laughed like hell about the incident. No repercussions. Never heard another thing. Such was our late teen-age years in Berwyn, IL. Frank
Five Guys is my favorite. Love their burgers and fries. They don't use "dough conditioners," which includes L-Cysteine, a nonfood item and unclean ingredient, especially the source used by the U. S. The fries are great too. I wish they wouldn't give so many fries because of all the waste.
There's a Five Guys down the street from me and when and if I ever move, one is just across the street. Popular in NJ.
There is a "Five Guys" in Ithaca that I have gone to. Delicious! Portions are to large. I mean I am a fricken hog, and yet I find their meals to be so big as to be wasteful.
We have at least one here in Huntsville, and I went when my son and his family were visiting from Idaho a few years back. The hamburgers came with everything on them, but they were the tiniest little hamburgers I have ever seen , except for the ones they make for little kids. They were like one of those 99 cent burgers from the fast food places, except they had all of the condiments that you wanted on them. Maybe they are better now. I never went back to see.
Five Guys are known for huge portions. My wife and I together can't finish what they consider a small order of fries. The burgers are also on the large side of normal.
