I've found if you look for ones that are meant for low carb diets, they're relatively low in sugar... They aren't always the most exciting flavors though... but I still keep some around for times of desperation...
I keep them handy as an alternative to a cookie usually I have a Fibre One bar of some kind. I don't look at the amount of sugar just the fibre in the bar.
I've been getting Fibre One bars too just to have around in case I want something, but usually I've been having protein shakes instead. They're the same amount of calories, less sugar and much more filling.
I enjoy most of the protein and fiber bars; so I guess either I am not very picky, or I just like that kind of thing in the morning with my coffee. I have several different types of protein bars, and when I find some on sale that look interesting, then I get a package to try. Kroger stores have something they call the "free friday giveaway" or something similar to that. It is usually a small item like a package of breakfast bars, or a protein energy bar, and all you have to do is click the link and download it to your kroger card, and then you get the free item when you go to the store. I have had several different ones to try that way. I think the last one was a Kelloggs breakfast bar. I am supposed to have something to eat when i take my heart medicine in the mornings, so the little food bars and a cup of coffee are perfect for that. I like the protein shakes as well, but not in the cold winter weather. In the summer, I don't drink coffee usually, and a chilled-out protein shake is awesome for breakfast.
Kevin thanks for the feedback. Since I've been eating protein bars over the past several months it has definitely improved my energy level.
It is called something like Pure Protein whey protein, and it is a vanilla creme flavor. It comes in the gallon size container. I think I probably got it at Sam's Club, but Walmart and Kroger also carry the large containers of whey protein. I like to get a plain vanilla flavor and then I add some strawberries, blueberries, peaches, bananas, chocolate,or whatever kind of flavor that I want with it. I just put it in the blender with some of my whey milk and some water , ice cubes, and blend it all up. In the hot summer weather, sometimes it makes a whole meal. I buy a whey milk that is called Morning Moos, and it is made by Augason Farms in Utah. You can either order direct from Augason, or Walmart carries it online. I usually buy the Morning Moo from Walmart and use the ship to store free delivery. Morning Moos is like a powdered milk, but it tastes a lot creamier, almost like the Creamora that you use in coffee. I am the only one here who drinks milk, and I don't have much of it, so having the powder is just perfect for me. I can mix it up as I need it, or just use it like powdered milk in recipes.
Thank you Yvonne! I think I would like the vanilla creme flavor with fruit. This is making me hungry right now!
Protein bars with a good taste to them are rare, however their are some out there. Special K makes some really good ones as well as other one that are pro health. However most are nasty, and one must be really hungry or in need of energy to enjoy them sometimes.
Nope, I have always hated them. Sure, people say they're really good, but I have always despised the taste, and especially the soft, vomit-like texture. Just thinking about them makes me want to puke.
I tried a few but the ones I bought were tasty and I wound up eating them all! And that was the end of that!
Articles I've seen recently say protein bars are no healthier than regular candy bars. I'll just enjoy a Baby Ruth or Butterfinger once in a while.
