Human race is doomed if we do not colonise the Moon and Mars, says Stephen Hawking.

The human race must start leaving Earth within 30 years to avoid being wiped out by over-population and climate change, Professor Stephen Hawking has warned.

"I am convinced that humans need to leave earth. The Earth is becoming too small for us, our physical resources are being drained at an alarming rate."

"We have given our planet the disastrous gift of climate change, rising temperatures, the reducing of polar ice caps , deforestation and decimation of animal species.”

"When we have reached similar crisis in or history there has usually been somewhere else to colonise. Columbus did it in 1492 when he discovered the new world. But now there is no new world. No Eutopia around the corner. We are running out of space and the only places to go to are other worlds."

    A lot of truth there
So thankful to have been born when I was and so thankful my two Grandmothers have not had to witness
what we have witnessed in recent years. I feel for my elder friend Jean, I managed to stop her reading newspapers
and watching the news, but damage was done to her fragile mind and she is now being cared for far from me :(

Don't panic. There are millions of undeveloped land sites to move to. So long as the means to feed and deal with the environment are achieved there is no problem.
    But;

What is a problem is the waste and pollution. Stop that and still there's new disease epidemic-pandemic -famine that will decimate populated areas post haste. We're trying to keep ahead of new diseases continually as if the earth is attempting to rid itself of a (human) virus.
We are barely staying ahead and those are problems to contend with without Hawkings 'the sky is falling" threat.

I don't see his words as a threat, but more of a statement of reality. Continuing human existence on Earth is beyond a doubt doomed. When, though? More than 30 years off, IMO. Writing is on the wall.

    Look anywhere in, say, Phoenix..,......

The earth will take care of itself as long as it exists. Overpopulation will be controlled by starvation, wars and diseases. The humans that remain may have to start over but they will still be here. There will most likely be a loss of technology but the humans that survive will be a hardy bunch.

A very few years ago in my recollection, predictions were that oil would run out,Earth would freeze, and the atom would power everything.
Human advances in science-tech have met all challenges and we are awash in oil facing not ice but heat and weather.

I think it is time we used genetics . After all humans are now so &^*%$*# huge-tall, they've designed sports just for the ectomorphs and bipedal gigans.(Round ball Sumo and Football behemoths) The size of humans today is nearing or reaching twice the size of smallish ancestors and requiring humongous caloric intake and occupied space. We need more midgets and pygmies, fewer basket ball giants and their like.
Genetically breed 'us' to 4' and 110 lbs max and make room and foodstuffs abundant. ;)

Alternatively we might stop/reduce the birthrate, control octomoms and become vegans. Feeding animals for our table really isn't economical...we might eat Soylent Green of necessity :D:eek:

*There are three basic human body types: the endomorph, characterized by a preponderance of body fat; the mesomorph, marked by a well-developed musculature; and the ectomorph, distinguished by a lack of much fat or muscle tissue

I'm with @Sheldon Scott on this one. Yes I've heard quite a bit about all of the different theories, (My hubby was a huge fan of Hawking.), and I don't remember what book it was, I think it might have been The Source, by James A. Michener, or maybe Stranger In A Strange Land. I can't remember the author, but I do remember that David Bowie did a video or movie about it.

Now it has been since I was about 17 or 18 years old, since I read that this world has gone through more civilizations than we will ever know about, and recent findings are starting to show us this. They've also come up with evidence that earlier civilizations even had some pretty advanced technology.

When those early times got out of control, something, (They're not sure of the causes.), would cause the demise of the places or the populous. The earth is so old that evidence of objects such as tools, bones, and structures could easily have disappeared from deterioration.
