Well, we made it through Irma. Electricity was off for 40 hrs (Monday at 3AM thru last night at 7PM). Wife thinks it's the worse 40 hours she ever been thru..........why? We love tv, using our computer and watching our DVD movies. It's not fun not having A/C in the afternoon, when it's hot. Yesterday afternoon it was 88 degrees. Sure don't like taking a shower by candle light. At night, had to use a flashlight wherever we went in the apartment. Had to use a flashlight during the day to go to the bathroom (no windows in either bathroom). Frig was off for those 40 hrs, but did have a large and smaller cooler with ice in them. Had to toss everything in the freezer and some things in the frig. Electricity came back on last night at 7PM. We were SO, happy. Heck, I even got tears in my eyes, I was so happy. Then, as I was setting a clock it went off again. About a minute later, it came back on and stayed on. Only two other times in my life I've been extremely happy, like when our electricity came back on (and stayed).........when I first met my wife and the day we married. So, today wife is at work and I'm at home doing numerous things, including............laundry, running dishwasher, threw out all freezer food and some frig food. Put food/drinks in coolers back into frig. We have never been without electricity for 40 hours before. Did go to local Waffle House yesterday AM for breakfast. They were on a limited menu and their waffle mix ran out. Unfortunately, my wife loves their waffles. We both had eggs and hash browns. Wanted to check out our boat in dry storage, but it wasn't open. The two Dock Masters were there cleaning up, but that was it. All of the docks, next to the dry storage, were under water. Yes, the St. Johns River swelled that much. Then, after we left a grocery store late yesterday afternoon, our engine light came on. NOW WHAT??? Had a guy at a auto parts store check out the code and the problem is with the electric fuel carb jet in cylinder 6. So, this AM, before wife went to work, took the Durango down to the Chrysler Dealer. Wanted to take it to Midas or Goodyear, because the dealer prices are higher, but didn't want to drive it to either or have it towed. Have AAA, but have no idea how long it would have taken to get a tow truck here. Just got a call from the Dealer..........fuel injector failed, $302 repair cost. Not bad, not bad at all. Glad our electricity is back and will be glad when our Durango is fixed.
Believe it or not, I was criticized by a two young ladies that work in our leasing office. When I asked the one girl, asst. leasing manager, how much food she had to throw out from her frig/freezer, due to our power outage, she said "I wasn't stupid enough to buy a lot of food during Irma, like I seen many do." I asked her, "what about those that had things in their frig/freezer before Irma was even in the Atlantic?" She wouldn't answer and started working again. When I told the young leasing agent (other girl) that we were scared during the storm, mainly because it was at night, and how uneasy we felt with no power, she said "why". I looked at her and said "perhaps when you get close to 70 years old, you'll understand". She shook her head a little and went back to work. Seemed like they just didn't care how we felt. Yes, I know there were others in our area that had it worse than us, but we still had it bad. We've only been without power one other time and it came back on within a half-hour, not out for 40 hrs. We couldn't wait for daylight on Monday and Tuesday, so we didn't have to use a flashlight or candle to go everywhere and do everything in our apartment. Sometimes I think some of the folks in their 20' and 30's just don't understand how Seniors feel and/or don't care.

Don't know, really. All we know is how ecstatically happy we were when our electricity came back on Tuesday night at 7PM. My wife really, and I do mean really, wanted to watch AGT on tv. She really, really loves tv and it drove her nuts not having it. She got pretty bored just sitting around without electricity.
I don't care about watching TV but I'd die without A/C in the summer...well, not really die but be pretty miserable. I'd be on my iPhone for entertainment until the battery drained and then I have two battery backup chargers or whatever they're called.
It was pretty miserable here, without A/C, on Tuesday afternoon. It was 90, high humidity and only 5 mph wind. We were sitting in our living room sweating. As far as tv goes, when she's at home, she loves the tv on. She doesn't like quietness, unless it's bedtime. We've never been book readers. TV, DVD movies and our Wii game keep us going at home. It was terrible, being without them.
I'm sure you were both miserable...the heat and humidity is enough alone. I would have suggested a romantic evening by candlelight but it would have been too hot for that.
Our idea of a romantic evening at home is having a Bud Light or margarita, food and a movie like Blended or Grownups. That's romantic and fun to us. Oh, add in a shot (or two) of Fireball. Nice evening.
Any thoughts on the nursing home deaths? I know it's a tragedy. However I don't think any generator can put out enough electricity to cool a building like that. The hospital close by had electricity? I don't know. They may have been incredibly overwhelmed and short staffed. While many have the opportunity to have jobs that are closed and they can stay away from work and attend to home and family and deal with the disaster, medical facilities are 24/7/365 and people are expected to be there. I don't know why the facility didn't reach out for help. But I have seen posts online for people screaming for arrest and prison of everyone who worked there. I don't think that's logical. A hospital worker who went there to help evacuate stated the staff was working very hard and doing the best they could.
This place had many complaints and was rated one star out out of 5. Fire Dept Rescue Ambulance personnel had been called there numerous times last year.
I was just looking at that, and it looks like this one will also go right over top of you, @Martin Alonzo . Has DR recovered enough from Irma to handle another storm this fast ? My daughter had a friend who was in Puerto Rica when Irma went through, and he said it was pretty bad there, and now they are getting hit again. There is another one (Lee) that is following behind Maria, and it looks like Jose is still turning in circles off the shore of the east coast, so that storm could still cause problems, too.
It looks like lee is heading north no problem the forecast for Maria looks now like it will hit the Puerto Rico and the east coast of the DR and then head north missing the US. Well that is there forecast for now but like all weather forecasts they all change
The models are fairly consistent out through 120hours, but then go haywire.. Examples: American European: The American is a bit north of the European. Stay safe!
