    @Anna Peters
My wife and I last week consumed a can of cooked Pork dated 2004; it was amongst a case brought out to our farm in Missouri, due to our request, by her sister, from Graybill Meats, Graybill, Indiana. They have been in business for decades. Wonderful, savory product in gravy. No hint of indigestion.

Rule is (or was), if a canned product is not bulged outward in any way, anaerobic bacteria have not become present.

But on the other hand, cans which have experienced freezing may have become bulged outwards permanently, so the storage history is important. I'm not condoning the consumption of foods indiscriminately, mind you, just telling of a personal experience. I've learned that hoopla about food spoilage is often propaganda, aimed at throwing away perfectly good product, to promote buying new to replace it. Frank

As proof, I offer Auguson Farms products, all kinds of canned foods with a shelf life of 25 years! They must be pretty certain of their product. Here's a quote. See: https://www.augasonfarms.com/food/meats-and-proteins/freeze-dried-meats

Augason Farms Freeze Dried Chicken Breast Chunks are a quick and delicious way to add chicken to any dish. Naturally low in fat, you simply rehydrate these pre-cooked chunks of real poultry and then use them as you would cooked chicken. These tasty morsels can be added to pastas, stir fry, casseroles, salads, sandwich mixes, enchiladas and a variety of other recipes. Use them in your everyday meal preparation as well as for long term emergency storage.

    • 25 year shelf life*

    Interesting thread folks !
In 1960, I was in the army and I was co-opted on to the catering committee. On a tour of inspection one day, we found that the South American corned beef had been sold to the army during WW2 - and we were eating it! Fast foreword to today,, I have just poured down the sink a full bottle of Slovenian Schnapps which was hiding at the back of the drinks cupboard for over ten years, and have been looking suspiciously at two opened bottles of North German Korn.....

Being able to speak personally only for myself as a woman I say better and wiser. I'm more comfortable in this body of mine since maturing, in many ways my body and I have gotten to be best friends now. When I was younger I was always trying to change the body God blessed me with for one reason or another. Now I look in the mirror and see a friend who has been with me through thick and thin and I like her very much just the way she is.

So much more wiser too. Learning when something happens...it is not the end of the world...or even the end of my life. Wiser in knowing that even the love that fits you best...is still far from perfect. Wiser to know I can't change the World...but I can change a part of it. And wiser in knowing that I know who I am, what I want. and what I believe and am at peace with all of this. Wiser to know Faith, Love, and Family are what life and living is all about for me.

Well, here we go again! Was going to make myself a Bloody Mary for breakfast the other day. Found out that not only the Mix we had open in the frig had expired last month (Feb), but the newer/unopened bottled had the same expiration date on it (Feb). We didn't even think about checking for an expiration date when we bought the Mix. Anyway, I read online that it's not recommended at all to use Bloody Mary Mix after the expiration date, due to the contents in the Mix. And, wife and I are always thinking about our age and that our stomachs aren't as "tough" as they use to be.

So, dumped the open bottle down the sink and took the unopened bottle back to Walmart. After returning it, went to the aisle that the Mixes were on and found out that all four bottles on the shelf had already expired. All four were the kind we like and had bought before. This isn't the first time, as I've stated in this thread, that we've found expired product at Walmart. Did find a good bottle, and better brand, at a local liquor store last weekend.

Was cleaning out our medicine cabinets and found the spray can of Solarcaine we have had expired the middle of last year. Went to four different stores and couldn't find that spray can of Solarcaine, until we stopped at a local grocery store. There is was and with an expiration date of Sept 2020. But, there were two cans in front of it that had expired in July 2018!

What the heck is going on out there with stores selling expired products??? Staff never checks dates or management simply tries selling outdated stuff to customers and hope customers don't look at the date?

That's exactly how it is. Proven to me when cottage cheese, marked way down, at our local supermarket in MO, turned out that all had expired 2 weeks previous. I took one container, sought out the assistant store manager, who smiled as I approached, already savvy of what I was about to point out. He said, "We know it's expired. That's why we marked it down."

In 1972 the Marine Corp served me C-Rats that were canned during the Korean War. I won't need embalming. I've eaten so many preservatives archaeologists will marvel at primitive mans burial customs!

Has anyone heard "buyer beware??" You are ultimately responsible for the things you purchase; the expiration date is there for you to see. Take some responsibility for your own actions.

I can tell you that pulling expiration dates are required by all companies that handle food.
The problem is man power and time...and it takes a lot of time to be through.
When items are pulled-sometimes two months in advance- the product is sent back to vendor for credit or trashed if a food. Meats are usually marked down two days before they expire. If not sold on mark down go into the distress bin.
There is alot of waste in pulling almost expired food items.
However there are store policies and government policy that also have to be taken into account.

Some places pull the food items before expiration and then send them to food banks or rescue missions for homeless people, and churches that feed the indigent. I think that this is a much better plan than just letting the food stay on the shelf and then throwing it away.
Our Kroger store usually marks food down before it goes out of date, and then you can get some great buys at half price or even less.
When it is fresh produce, it has to be used right away, but since we eat a lot of vegetables and salads, that is not a problem at our house.
