Mrs Salt and I were in the dairy of Banisters farm in Finchampstead, near Reading, GB, milking her prize Jersey Herd. The battered transistor radio covered in birds' poo, was on the window ledge, blaring away when the news of Kennedy's demise was announced in shocked tones. and you ?
At the time the announcement was made I was in one of my Grade 12 High School classes. I was stunned when first hearing the horrible news and I remember one girl in particular who became very emotional.
I was 11, and I had just entered another foster home. The new foster mother and I were in the administration office at another new school trying to get me enrolled. All of the sudden, someone ran in telling everyone to look at the news on the TV. They shut the school down and sent everyone home, so it was two more days before I was registered. It was also the day I found out what a president was, and that we didn’t have a king or queen.
I was playing in the 8th grade county BB tournament at the high school. Play was suspended and everyone was sent to buses and back to their respective schools. I can't recall an official announcement, before we got back to our classrooms and the teachers told us.
I was in 7th grade, it was about 1:30 when the principal announced it. I was sad but at age 12 I wasn't following the president yet. I recall it being a Friday and that we had the following Monday and Tuesday off from school.
I had been sent home from school, because of fever and vomiting. Was 15 at the time, laying on the couch watching the black and white we still owned. ABC channel 8 was on, when suddenly picture went all wacky, then on came a little overweight news caster, standing behind a curtain shaking so bad the papers in his hand jumped up and down. He announced only that the POTUS had been shot. My mother came from the kitchen after hearing the announcement and begin to cry. Then a knock at the door, next door neighbor, then the phone began to ring. Total chaos after that.
It was just before noon, I had been employed by Victor Mfg. & Gasket Co., in Chicago, since September 22, two months before that day. Two of us were crossing Fillmore Street between Plants # 1 and #2, to go do some lab work. The guard on duty outdoors told us about the event having happened in Dallas. No one could grasp the immediate meaning, it was surreal. I was 21 years old. Frank
I was too young to remember. I do however remember exactly where I was when I heard about the shootings of the mayor and supervisor of San Francisco, George Moscone and Harvey Milk in 1978. I knew it was 78 but looked it up to be sure.
In finality do you believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone, or perhaps didn't act materially at all, in the assassination? I believe he was a scapegoat, that belief supported by the fact that security forces allowed a jerk like Ruby to gain access to Oswald. Ruby was a restaurant owner, revealed later to be dying of cancer. Might he and his wife have been handsomely "paid-off" to coordinate a planned "hit" on Oswald, thus basically "closing the case" against him? The entire presidential loss reeks of dubious govt input to the public. Frank
I was in grade school and the news came though on the public address system. Distinctly remember the boy sitting ahead of me turning around and whispering "the Russians did it"
I was in the 7th grade and it didn't affect me at all, except that we got to go home from school early. I can remember making a joke about hoping they shot him again tomorrow. To me, the president was someone who was on television and I don't think that I thought of him as a real person.
Honest, I swear, I was NOT in Dallas! Plus, I didn't even know JFK was going to be in Dallas! I thought he was still in D.C. helping paint the White House! I have witnesses. I remember my teacher was crying and I thought at the time it was because she looked at my test scores................................ Can I plead the fifth?
