USB stands for Universal Serial Bus and it is used to comment almost anything to a computer that conforms to the standard--mice, external drives, memory sticks, printers, monitors, etc.,etc., etc.

It replaced the serial connection on todays computers. Some still have the serial connection along with the usb.

I use usb's to save photos on, save Excel Spreadsheets of boat and vehicle repairs, and other things. Actually transferred all photos from cd's to usb's. Some Blu-Ray DVD Players, like ours, has a slot for a usb in the front. The player can show pictures on our usb's on our tv. Some TV's also have a slot for a usb to show whatever is on the usb. Our Blu-Ray DVD Player shows the pictures on our usb's much clearer.

A usb can be taken anywhere and plugged into any computer, laptop or desktop, and used.

Flash drives connect to the USB port but they are not really the same thing.

Looks to me like a USB is nothing more than a connecting wire, not capable of storing information itself, only able to transfer electrically, information stored in one device over to another capable of storing it. Thus, my wife takes digital images, and uses a USB to connect the digital camera to our laptop.

Flash Drive looks to me to be an information storage device in miniature, something like an SD card in our camera.

'Course, I, too, am an old fart trailing way behind the newest trends along the "pipeline".

I have heard that it is possible download songs into a USB. Is that true and how many typical 1960's style songs can it store ?
Is it hard to down load songs from MP# on my laptop into that USB thingy ?

Depending on the size (memory) of the flash drive, you can save thousands of songs...not as many videos, though, as they take more memory. There are also MP3 players that you can get. There is also the ability to load songs onto your smart phone, if you have one.

I know that there is a program on Windows 7 Media Center that gives directions on downloading music to other devices. I used it to burn MP3 songs which I had downloaded to my PC then burned on to a cd. My first time ever and I probably ruined 5 discs until I got it right.

Ok, thank you all. I now know what a USB is for. I knew about the USB wire which connects the tv and the computer. and the tv to the video disc player but not the USB thingy.

Have never heard of a “usb wire”.
There is only a connection (slot) that is for what some, like myself, call a usb which is also called a flash drive.

Only way I know to describe a usb.
