I broke my coffee cup this morning when I was washing the dishes. It was a plain white cup, porcelain I suppose. I got it at a thrift store. It caught my eye because painted on one side in black was: Then sings my soul, a phrase I suppose from from the song, “How Great Thou Art”. I know it’s all in the mind but seems to me coffee, even hot tea, tastes better coming out of your favorite cup. I’ll drink my coffee in the morning out of another cup but I’m sure it won’t be the same, I’ll miss that cup. Tomorrow I’m going in search of another coffee cup. It will have to hold at least eight ounces, be of a certain weight, made of a certain material, and bring its own magic to the ritual that is the morning coffee. It my hand it will have to feel that ‘just right’ feeling. We must be compatible. I know the search will not be easy. I’ve looked online. Everything looked alien. I’m drinking a special coffee from San Francisco, a very good coffee but I know that taste will be diminished in a plain, ordinary cup from my cabinet. Still an ordinary cup is better than nothing. It will, I’m sure, make haste the search for another cup.
Sorry you broke your favorite cup. It's understandable to have a favorite cup. All my dishes are vintage thrift store finds. I'm always on the look out for them. And vintage coffee mugs also. My latest find is a large "Le Chat" vintage mug for $1.00. Good luck on your search.
I searched three stores today. Bought two cups, made in England. Springfield china. Not quite as large but both well balanced, feel comfortable in the hand and I have a feeling we'll get along well once w get to know each other.
I have a favorite cup, too. Not too big, not too small. Not too thick, not too thin. If I break it, I'll probably never find another perfect one.
Were they from thrift stores @Bill Boggs If so you did good in your search. I've collected what I have over years. Kitchen items and dishes are what I look at first.
Actually, Kitty,@Kitty Carmel, I called both ofthem Springfield Bone China, only one is. I mislabeled one of them. Only one is Springfield china. The other is by Noritake, Blue Orchard, CookinServe China from Japan. I like kboth of them. Yees they were, the Salvation Army trift store.
One of the folks I used to work with had a favorite cup at work. He never washed it out---for years. It was black inside with coffee stains. Probably thought it made it taste better. I'm not making fun or criticizing, he was a really nice person. I use a black cup at home, so it seldom gets washed, but at least 3-4 times a year.
@Nancy Hart Back in my young years I worked with Boy Scouts. Have been on week long camping trips and never washed my cup. Once in a while dip it in a creek and slosh water around in it. I've often thought a black cup would solve a lot of problems if only I could find one just so. Hot tea does a job on white cups. Maybe I should look for a tea stained color. I will put that on my 'to do' list.
I've been having better luck finding some dishes at the Salvation Army lately. We have the higher end SA and then the other store that is regular. The regular one is much better. It's where all the utilitarian stuff is at better prices.
Abraham Lincoln’s Coffee Cup, 1887 "Richmond had fallen. Lee had surrendered. The war was finally coming to an end. It was time to celebrate the victory, unify the American people and rebuild the nation". "On the evening of Good Friday, April 14, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln decided to spend a relaxing evening at Ford’s Theatre. He would never return to the White House". "Years later, in 1887, Capt. D.W. Taylor presented this cup to Robert Todd Lincoln, the oldest of Abraham and Mary Lincoln's four sons. He explained that a White House servant had seen the President leave the cup behind on a windowsill just before departing for the theater and had preserved it as a relic of that tragic night". "This item is one of 137 million artifacts, works of art and specimens in the Smithsonian’s collection. It is on display at the National Museum of American History". (reenactment)
I used to have that problem, until I switched to the blue & white speckled enamelware stuff. Can't break metal. Guess one could chip it if rough enough. Used to use it for camping, now it's everyday. Coffee cools faster in a metal cup, and I can set a metal plate in a warm oven to take my time eating.
I have ordered a new mug, it is made for tea infusing, but I have been reading that it works wonderfully for making a mug of coffee also. This is the 20 oz size , so it will hold a fine cup of coffee or tea, and still have room for creamer. It has a ceramic lid that will help keep the coffee warm longer, and I have one of those little coffee warmer pads that I always set my coffee on to keep warm. Amazon has an amazing variety of them, in all sizes. I really liked the Chinese looking ones, but they didn’t hold nearly as much coffee or tea, and after browsing for almost a week, I ended up getting just this plain black one.
My #1 that a very special person got me, heavy, holds plenty. big bottom and don't tip over easy, ot means lots to me, I use it daily.
My coffee cup is used twice per week, on Saturdays and Sundays after breakfast. It is a nice cup, and is unbreakable. I drink only Folgers coffee, which my Wife makes for me. She drinks tea. That's it...
