On TV there are medicinal pitchmen who tell you that if you have to go to the Bathroom at night, then you have a Prostate problem!

Well, I've been going to the bathroom at night for 80 years, and I don't know anything about any Prostate problem!

Bathrooms have light switches on the wall, so people may go to the bathroom at night for whatever reason.

I sleep with a bottle of chilled water at my bedside, and when I've consumed enough, my bladder will give me a sign that I should relieve it.

I get 2 physical exams every year, and so far no physician has told me that I have any Prostate issues.

    That's all...

I sleep with a bottle of chilled water at my bedside, and as I drink, my bladder fills, and I eventually get a sign that I have to go to the bathroom to relieve it.

    How strange!

I have had prostate cancer but getting up to go to the bathroom at night wasn't part of it. If I wake up during the night and don't go right back to sleep, I might need to go to the bathroom. Otherwise, I sleep through.

Getting up frequently to pee at night is a symptom of BPH, not cancer. The drugs shrink the prostate (supposedly) making bladder emptying more complete.

I have had BPH for many years and get up to pee once or sometimes twice at night, plus poor flow etc., I have tried all the usual natural remedies and a few prescription drugs, which had too many bad side effects for me. After a routine check up my Dr gave me a prescription for Finasteride, which has the side effects of growing more hair and possibly man boobs, neither of which I need but not serious. It takes 6 or more months to have any effect so we will see.
More than 70% of men over 60 have prostate cancer cells, and if you survive to 90 it's almost 100% but it rarely develops enough to kill you.

.........and by the time a man is 60 years old, according to this autopsy study, his chances of having prostate cancer is 70 percent...... LINK

My ex had an enlarged prostrate and he was going to the bathroom at night frequently...to the point where he felt he was not getting a restful night's sleep so he did end up seeing a Urologist who diagnosed this and gave him a prescription which did seem to help him. In later years though he did get prostrate cancer too which with surgery, etc. was taken care of and he is still cancer free at 74 years young.

His dad died at 45 years old of a heart attack and my ex was always saying he would not live past 45 either. He is diabetic, has high blood pressure, an enlarged heart, and the bout with prostrate cancer and is still going strong working outdoors as a Master Gardener.

I would kinda rather somebody, whether through prescription ads or whatever, do a little fear mongering than not.
Believe it or not, there are some men out there who do not even know they have a prostate while some others mistake the word for laying face down on the floor.
Still, there are those macho guys who know what a prostate does but believe that nothing can harm them much the same as the guys who refuse to go for a colonoscopy.

All the above are examples of either ignorance or downright stupidity and because of that ignorance and / or stupidity many men wind up going under the knife, taking chemo, radiation or are destined for a premature coffin.
To top it all off, because many men do die or have to see the surgeon, the insurance rates keep going up.

Isn’t it a little strange that more men have prostate and testicle cancer than women who have contracted breast cancer? Who hears about THAT?
Better a little fear mongering such as the breat cancer campaign than nothing at all.

Seeing a doctor about your prostate problem makes more sense than sending away for whatever they are selling in the radio ad, however.

If my blood and urine chemistry analysis twice a year shows my innards are AOK, then I'm not worrying!

If the blood and urine tests (PSA blood test) aren’t specific to a possible prostate problem then there might be a problem, but all you have to do is ask your doctor for it and bingo...done.

There are a lot of products that are being touted as solid cancer prevention drugs but thus far, the best prevention is to try to keep the little (hopefully) thing healthy.
I have been taking saw palmetto for a few years now after I was told that things didn’t look and feel right and so far my latest reports have been very good.

I have posted about this but I will share it again here. My husband's brother is living with prostrate cancer and he is pretty much a guinea pig because by the time it was diagnosed it was to advanced to take out his prostrate. Radiation and other therapies did nothing to stop it from spreading. He had no problems that you would think would point to having something wrong with his bladder...or prostrate, like trouble urinating, going more at night, etc. What he did have was backaches...but his back often gave him trouble as he got older after a long day at work...so he thought nothing of that...until the pain got so bad he thought seeing a Doctor and getting something for it would be a good idea. Instead of a muscle relaxer or stronger pain relief prescription he found out he had advanced Prostrate cancer that had spread to his back bone. They did do surgery on that and removed part of his back bone where the cancer had basically eaten it up....and they put a steel rod in. Last time we talked it had spread to the bone in one of his arms. And all they can do is try experimental things because all the regular stuff they do...did nothing. He lives in Colorado and we know he isn't telling us everything. My husband wanted to go visit him but his brother kept changing the subject and beating around the bush about a visit with him. Finally one day my husband just came out and asked him if he didn't want him to come and visit. And his brother told him he would rather have him remember him like he was when they were younger. My husband's going to respect his brother's wishes in this even though it's not what he wants.

He also has to keep having his throat dilated so he can eat...he says this isn't from the cancer but he never had that problem before so it's either the cancer or the stuff they've used to try to stop it.

Fearmongers aside...every man as he gets older needs to have the health of his prostrate checked out often enough to make sure cancer doesn't beat you to it.
