As a result of all of this fun conversation, I have researched coloring books for adults on Amazon.com. I found great examples of coloring books that feature quilting patterns, state birds and flowers, butterflies, etc. So I plan to get one of these for my personal enjoyment. Thanks @Joss Brown for this topic!
Here's a really great youtube clip, for adult coloring, using "art media" (in other wor Here's a great youtube video that shows some adult coloring, using "art media tools" (in other words, something besides crayons). She used oil pastel crayons, that she's able to blend and mix, for a really great effect. She also shows a little bit about embellishing. The videos a little lonG (and slow) but has some good information.
I was never good at drawing or either painting, but coloring different pictures is one of my hobbies I'd say.
I am neutral towards coloring, but I absolutely hate painting. I always hated it with a passion, ever since I was a kid. I would even have my mother paint for me when we were given assignments in art class.
Sometimes I actually do. Not by myself but if I am around children and they want to I will. I much prefer something like painting or drawing even though I am not good at either of those. Something about coloring can make anyone feel like a kid again.
I went to sign up for a beginning art class. I sort of held back. ANYONE can draw, I was told as I didn't think I would be capeable. My fine motor skills are minimal. After a few minutes of one on one, the teacher gave me my money back. I have seen people on airplanes with coloring books with lovely involved pictures. They tell me it is very relaxing.
Now that I would not try,but I do love to color, not anymore withe the ones you need colored pencils for because I have tunnel vision but good ole' Crayola crayons. And lots of colors.
For most of my life, I loved drawing and painting ; but I have not done any of that for years now. When the kids were little, I decorated their clothing with my Artex paint set, and even learned how to embroider pillowcases and paint on t-shirts. Last winter, I bought some paints from Amazon because couple of the pictures on my favorite t-shirts had faded, and then I painted them to bring the shirt back to life again. I enjoyed it, and maybe this winter, I will do that again, if I decide on what to paint.
I like to color especially when my granddaughters are here. They have ruined all of 'my' favorite coloring books for adults. But I can't say 'no.'
I'm so glad to see that other people like to color! I have lots of art supplies, but sometimes I don't feel like making a big mess or even deciding what to paint, so I simply get out a dollar store coloring book and my big opera set of crayons and color. I have a friend who was in a rehab center for a few months. She told me they were all required to color for a half hour or so every day. I guess it must be good for us!
I have been looking at the Pigment coloring app for iPad (also comes for android, I think), and it does a lot of amazing things beyond just basic coloring. You can import your own pictures to color, turn your photos into greyscale, and then color them yourself, and there are lots of different brushes and painting features you can use. The downside is that the premium app is about $60 for a year, or $10 a month by the month. It does come with a free week’s trial loaded with all of the features, and I think that you can continue to use a free basic version if you want to do that, but you lose all of the “goody features”. I am going to try it for the week, I have downloaded the app, but not started the free trial as of yet. There are about a zillion videos about using this app on youtube, so I am watching a lot of those first, before I start the free trial and see how well I like this coloring on my iPad. You can also do freehand drawing and coloring with the app; so not all of the pictures I have seen from the app look like a colored picture from a comic book, or something like that. Some look like actual paintings, and I am enchanted by this idea. A person could use a regular photo, and color it to look like you made an oil painting, or pastel painting, or something along that line, using this app. I think that this is something you might enjoy doing with your tablet, @Julia Curtis ! Here is a vide that shows a little bit of what the app can do.
