I only saved bacon grease, never saved any oil I fried in, maybe I'd use it one more time if it was only potatoes I was frying but no more than that. I only used Mazola corn oil too because that's what my mom used. :)

Bacon fat I saved because it gave a good flavor to other foods.

Not all patients with high cholesterol need statins. Statins are best given to hypercholesterolemic patients who have a high risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

Here is a most interesting article that links cholesterol to several health benefits, as well as extending your chances of living longer. The statin drugs, as has been mentioned, are one of the most widely prescribed drugs, and a great money-maker for the pharmaceutical companies; so it is no wonder that they want to keep the idea circulating about the dangers of cholesterol and heart disease, even though there are strong indications that this is quite often not right.
Along with the epidemic of cholesterol-reducing dietary changes and medications, we have had a dramatic increase in Alzheimer's and other diseases that cause dementia. Since our brain needs cholesterol in order to function properly, it certainly brings up the concern of whether the statin drugs are a partial cause of increased Alzheimer's in this country.

I personally don't know anyone with Alzheimer's...heart disease was never a cause of death in my side of the family and the youngest anyone died is in their 80's.

I do recall my grandmother being the one with high BP and cholesterol...I know she took a blood thinner and maybe a statin, she was also diabetic but died of pneumonia in the hospital at age 87.

Statin came in to reduce the body’s ability of producing cholesterol. All this came about through research done by Dr. Ansell Keys which now has been disproven as fraud but put in motion a new pharmaceutical drug called statins. The push of the American Heart Association which took a donation [bribe] of 1.7 million dollars to demonize saturated fat in order to promote Crisco which in turn produced more medical problems than the old lard. This scam made the pharmaceutical companies billions of dollars per year they do not want this to end. The doctors bless their souls have been educated by the pharmaceutical companies and also have pharm. Reps visiting their offices to keep them up on the latest statin and others.

Cholesterol is so important the body makes it and the medical system does not ask why something happens only it happened. So when the arteries get filled with cholesterol they do not ask why they just go after the cholesterol. They do not realize the cholesterol just saved you life because the damage to the artery was repaired with the cholesterol. How come the vanes don’t clog up the same as arteries they both have the same cholesterol because an artery with a hole is life threatening a vane is not. If you stop the damage in the arteries the body would reduce the cholesterol by itself.

I was looking into an article published in the tabloid The Sun and I couldn't fined the original paper behind the article, but I found this instead which I found interesting:

    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25655639

I have long thought that most of the benefits of statins, if there are any, are due to the anti-inflammatory properties of the drugs, not the effect on cholesterol production

This sounds to me like another good reason not to take statins. From the article:

Thus, the epidemic of heart failure and atherosclerosis that plagues the modern world may paradoxically be aggravated by the pervasive use of statin drugs. We propose that current statin treatment guidelines be critically reevaluated.

My VA doctor recently put me on statins in order to reduce my LDL but they went into the garbage when they showed up in the mail. There are way too many downsides and only a couple of positives so for me, it just isn’t practical.

For one, my chemistry is a little tricky because as a clean and natural bodybuilder, [and an older one at that], I have to not only work with some pretty hefty work programs but my diet is also user specific.
One of the main problems is that the higher overall amount of testosterone a man has, the higher his LDL is going to be in proportion to HDL. Higher testosterone levels deeply affects HDL but doesn’t seem to bother LDL but I have to have a higher T level in order to build muscle mass. It’s a balancing act but I know how to work it.

One other problem is that creatine is also created in the liver and statin drugs have a habit of inhibiting that too.
Without creatine there is little to no ATP and without that there are no muscle contractions and without contraction there is no possibility of muscle mass gains. ALL muscle fiber is reliant upon ATP for energy.

Those are just a couple of examples but there are at least another dozen or so processes that the use of statin drugs would make one of my passions impossible to achieve.
Generally speaking, if I know what is going on I can combat just about any condition by a simple twist in my diet and or the use of natural supplimentation in order to keep a good chemical balance.
Now that I know that my LDL is high, I will get more frequent blood tests whilst tweaking my diet accordingly.

My last two doctors have had little else on their minds. I left one doctor largely for that reason. Whatever my complaint, he wouldn't discuss anything but Lipitor. It was as if he wouldn't see me for anything else unless I was taking Lipitor. Now, we have a UK study that shows that statin drugs are not helpful at all.

I've been taking statins for about 15 years and I'm still right side up, not sure if that has anything to do with the drugs.

I always check my PCP and eye guy to see if they accept money from drug companies.

This is one site that provides that information and might be helpful in determining your doctor's motives.

Interesting. My PCP is listed for $2210, but I don't think the drug/device companies are getting their money's worth. He does not push drugs at all. He did suggest an unnecessary knee brace one time, which I quickly dismissed. He does push vitamins and minerals a lot.

Oh I forgot, he does recommend diagnostic and preventative testing, by specialists, a lot, but I also put the damper on many of those.

My current doctor is not on the list. My previous doctor is, but for under $100 so that's pretty much irrelevant.
