Ken, they are saying "freezing rain" aka snow/rain combined?

I haven't looked at the link but the difference in sleet and freezing rain is; sleet freezes in the atmosphere and falls to the ground. Freezing rain falls as a liquid and freezes on contact. It is a lot more dangerous than sleet, IMO. It freezes on power lines and tree limbs, causing major power outages. I dread freezing rain.

It's been in the high 40s and low to mid 50s here for the past couple of days, and raining, so a lot of our snow is gone. We have some bare spots in the back yard and things are pretty sloppy around here.

The rain and warm temps washed all of our snow away on Friday and today we got a fresh coating to an inch on the lawns.

The local weather prognosticators are predicting a couple of inches of fresh snow on Monday.

Not cold enough for the local ski resorts to cash in on Christmas break.

Well, sure doesn't look like Christmas here, but then again, it's not suppose to...…….this is Florida! It's "Florida cold" though and we never thought it would get this cold here.

However, on Christmas Day 2010, we were sitting in our living room and I looked out the large window...……..it was snowing. Yes, it was snowing! I got our video camera and zoomed in on some trees and it was COMING DOWN pretty heavy, but not sticking. Some neighbors were outside saying "it's snowing!"

I can't seem to find a good place to put things here, so I'm sticking this picture in "Ugh, Snow" because of the keyword "Snow." [IMG]

Telescoping Railroad Snow Shed, Donner Pass, 1910

"To prevent fires from spreading, spaces were needed in the long line of snowsheds, so telescoping sheds were built. In summer one section of shed was rolled into another leaving a firebreak."

I'd like to see a video of how that was done.

Snow sheds–this one in the Sierra Nevada Mountains— were built to lead any avalanche over the roof into the valley below.

The weather reports are telling us that we're having the worst storm of the season today and that it's supposed to turn into a rainy mess tomorrow, but so far we haven't had any new snow today. It snowed pretty hard yesterday but for only a little while, adding only a couple of inches of snow. We were forecast to have two feet of snow today but it's been a pretty pleasant day so far; no snow and it's not even particularly cold. The big storms sometimes pass over us, probably having something to do with the mountain.

Still cold here, and we have only about 10 inches of snow depth. With the near-full moon now, it is almost daylight outside when it is clear. Wonderful! Two years ago at this time it was in the -40s F., so it being -15 F. now is not so bad. The days are getting longer , and it is predicted to snow all next week...but it probably won't.

I guess it's not as warm as it feels here. It's five degrees. Although the radio is still talking about the weather as if it's snowing heavily today, it's not, and I can see that my weather app no longer says anything about snow today, moving that to tomorrow. I doubt we'll get two feet though since they most always exaggerate.
