It's just my kind of place for sure and I could just imagine turning it into a retirement settlement for folks like many of us. I could probably move my entire family there, but some of the younger folks would have to commute to jobs in their career fields. It's an interesting proposition this town and if I had that kind of money I sure would go check the possibilities out.
Well that's a whole town for the price of a 5 bedroom house in my neighbourhood...wow!! Wonder what the area is like for crime
Reminds me of the time, in the 1990's, when Kim Basinger (and some other investors) bought most of Braselton, Georgia. I think they paid $20 million. They were going to turn it into a tourist attraction, theme park and movie production set. They sold it a few years later for only $4 million. What is it about Georgia towns?
Well the empty places look like the are in good shape...so it doesn't look like vandalism at least is much of a problem there.
I love small southern towns. I was born in Nashville GA; the population was around 4500 then and not much changed today.
I just took the video tour, OMG it's like something out of Gone with the wind inside those buildings... the old barber shop, the restaurant , the theatre.. the fantastic ancient old Bank with the original fittings ... I loved them all... but who would buy something so far away from civilisation and jobs.. ... I hope someone buys it and makes it into something really special..
That's mostly farming/agricultural area, Holly. There's probably a lot of timber which is big business nowadays.
Retired people who have their own income. It actually has a lot of potential for those interested in something like this.
I immediately thought of Kim Basinger buying Braselton, GA in 1989. She personally bankrupted, and she and her partners immediately sold it at a huge loss. It could work out, but there's so many expenses involved and relying on a lot of crews... a bed and breakfast has always seemed like a good investment, a lot of work, but family run, at least you can count on the help.
Apparently someone did buy Toomsboro in the past, thinking of making it a tourist attraction...but no one was attracted! It seems to have had sorghum molasses (syrup) and cotton as the crops for the area, and I would guess maybe turpentine at some time as well.
I would not want to make it a tourist attraction. I would like to make it a nice, safe retirement village for those so inclined.
This reminds me of the Marsh v. Alabama case. A private town owned by Gulf was still bound by the 1st Amendment it was ruled when they prohibited Jehovah Witnesses from passing out literature. The first case where a private entity was bound by the 1st. Convictions reversed.
The first thing I think of when I see a town like that for sale is "What are the hidden liabilities?" It might have some horrendous EPA cleanup work to be done, and they're just waiting for the right sucker buyer to step into it.
