Now, this could be "personal opinions", but to us...…..no way we'd do it. I have a classmate, and her husband, that sold their home in Naples, FL, bought a motorhome and are traveling. Her husband gave up his drivers license due to his eyesight, so she has to do all of the driving of the motorhome with towing their small car. When I heard about this, wife and I said "no way could one of us drive and not the other. This kind of living wouldn't be for us, especially when the driving duties would be restricted to one person. What do you think?
I couldn't and wouldn't commit myself to be the sole driver especially for travelling only. I love to look around while on the road. Johnny on the other hand would if he was able to drive.
I actually thought about retirement in a motorhome for a couple of years. Just travel around America. If my kids annoy me I could drive away in the middle of the night. Without a time limit, you could pick times to be on the road when they aren't so busy. There are RV forums where people share best places to gas up and RV park information. I personally would prefer a fifth wheel, but I think anyone could learn to drive a class A motorhome. Women drive school buses and city buses.
We have a motorhome and tow a Jeep Wrangler. Both of us can drive the RV but usually my husband does all the driving, which is fine with me.
The other half does all the driving when pulling the fifth wheel. He'd be "uncomfortable" if he wasn't driving and it's just fine with me as I like to look at the sights and take pictures.
Whenever we drive, for a vacation or move, we both take turns driving. We always get a motel/hotel room each night we are on the road, because we don't like driving at night. Guess it's just hard for me to see a couple doing "traveling", but only one can drive.
Well, Cody, it may come as a shocking surprise to you (so many things apparently do.....), but there are many, many traveling couples out there who only have one who drives the motorhome or the tow vehicle. We've met thousands of couples during our ten years of seasonal traveling and I'd say that in a healthy percentage of the cases, it's the male partner who does all the driving. I haven't come across anyone particularly unhappy about that, except maybe you. Now, if the traveling is being done in a car as opposed to an RV, then I'm sure that the driving is more equitably shared as it is in our case. In fact, I drive here in the mountains more than he does, as I LOVE mountain roads (I think I was a European road race driver in a previous life.....LOL) What you mentioned in your OP was RV driving, so that's what I'm addressing. Just as I must bow to your professed knowledge of rodeo and elk rutting, you will need to accept my superior knowledge of RV'ing and life on the road. Fair?
What Mary said. Plus, in an RV you can pull into a rest area, make lunch, watch TV and take a nap. No one should get over-tired from driving. (And speaking for myself, I always get more tired just riding than when I'm driving.) Oh, and in some states if the rig is in excess of 26,000 pounds you need a special driver's license, but that's another topic.
I wasn't unhappy about anything about RVing. But, only having one driver just seemed somewhat odd to us. Now, notice the word "us", not "me". Wife and I agree that we would share driving or not go. It's like already knew...……..people would have their own opinion about RVing with only one, out of a couple, driving.
I am the only driver and only the driver on trips. The Missus is the navigator. She's like Dan'l Fricken Boone. This girl sits in front of the computer and figures our route. She even plans in enough tractor and equipment museums to keep me happy! She can tell me every exit and turn as we travel. We tow a travel trailer so we like to avoid interstates whenever we can. She will not get in the drivers seat, and truth be told, I am glad she won't. I am a horrible passenger!
My wife is always happy to take over the driving when I'm ready to stop. When we move to Colorado, we will be using our iPhone and large map book to find things. Now, when we tow our power boat (20' on a 27' trailer) a certain distance, I will do all of the driving. I pulled a 2-horse trailer for a number of years.
Waaaay back when, my wife commuted to work in a VW camper, which we also vacationed in. After that there was a series of trailers, but she never drove with any of them in tow. Over the years on different trips we went south as far as Mazatlan in Mexico and as far north as Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia.
I had one of the VW camper buses many years back, and I totally loved that little van. It was easy to drive, got great gas mileage, and was perfect for traveling with . Our biggest trip, we went down the coast of Oregon and back to Washington, and over to eastern Washington and looked at the laser light show at Grand Coulee Dam. It was a fun time, the kids enjoyed it, and we usually stayed at a little campground at night so everyone could swim (if there was a pool), shower, and just spend time outside of the vehicle running around.
we have a coach..tow a small car...my husband drives...spent lots of years traveling for his work...staying for lengthy times... not anymore
