"The Real Story of Jane Fonda and the Vietnam Vets Who Hate Her"

This was big news back then, I think early '70s. Well-known worldwide, her antics in North Vietnam were played up to the hilt. The lasting question has always been did she hurt our country?

Anti-war activist, such folks often were welcomed by the North Viets to be exploited for propaganda purposes. Rumor was she committed treasonous acts:
"The long-standing claim that Jane Fonda turned smuggled messages from U.S. POWs over to their North Vietnamese captors is false."

She did, however, pose amongst enemy anti-aircraft guns. The origins of the next image are not clear, at least to me:

"Fonda was no more or less a lightning rod for criticism than any other celebrity who spoke against the war during that time, but that all changed in 1972."

"She went to Hanoi that year to tour villages, cities and infrastructure. A series of photos of her sitting at an NVA anti-aircraft battery earned her the nickname “Hanoi Jane” and the undying spite of Vietnam veterans everywhere. There were also rumors she turned over secret messages from POWs to their captors. This is not true, but still, her father was probably more than a little disappointed in her."

This brings me to the reason for my OP. Popped into my mind today that had the N. Vietnamese detained her and demanded a healthy ransom, perhaps many of millions of $$, would old Hank have paid it? Or left her to rot there? He was, after all, a retired U.S. Naval Officer. At any rate, I'm sure he was not proud of her........

@Bobby Cole may have a bit to say regarding this.

After reading (a while ago) about the rift between Henry and Jane, I doubt he'd have paid any ransom. But of course we have no way of knowing.

Many Vietnam vets have their own point of view concerning Jane Fonda so it goes without saying that I have my own issues with her.
To start, we, as soldiers knew that the war (yes, war) was not popular with the general citizenry of the U.S. as it wasn’t particularly popular with us either.
That said, the reason for that unpopularity to wash over to the soldiers who fought in that war escapes me. When we came back we were regarded as something akin to animals and didn’t warrant so much as a welcome home and sometimes, not even welcomed by our own families.

Jane Fonda is simply a focal point to me. She was the body and soul of all those who acted against the American soldier. Her inclusiveness in the demonstrations against the war and it’s soldiers were epitomized by the North Vietnamese welcoming committee as she enjoyed her visit to Hanoi and the prisons where the POW’s were kept.
As if the news of all that was happening in the U.S. wasn’t enough to encourage our enemy, there was the infamous Jane Fonda, daughter of one of our movie heroes, smiling and giving even more confidence to the NVA that they were winning the war.
She wasn’t there to help smooth over our differences by any means or even give comfort to our POW’s; she was there as an enemy sympathizer which, if it were any other common American citizen, it would have been deemed as treason.

I do not in any way hate the lady, for hate is something I cannot produce no matter who it is but I certainly have no use for her or those she represented either.

And to the question: Daddy probably would have paid dearly no matter what she did. Dads are kinda like that.

I had not been aware of a rift, but it certainly wouldn't surprise me.....

It should be made known that at least one member here DOES forgive her......this is heartening in some ways.

The best quality of perfect forgiveness is that whilst one may never forget, the subject for which one is forgiving never comes up anew.
In so saying, I do suppose I still have a lot of work to do in that particular realm simply because of my lack of hesitancy in revealing my own feelings concerning her.

Double, double, toil and trouble! I can think of only one person other than yourself who could travel in two directions at the same time: Albert Einstein!

During those years, it's understandable she was young and stupid. Now, she's a mouthy liberal, it's understood she is also old and stupid.

    @Bess Barber
As I see things, individuals "in the public eye", especially moneyed-individuals, think of themselves as being in the upper echelon of society, such that their own positions and views take precedent even over those of the general public; they are self-appointed "leaders" of society, and will spare little expense and effort to get that point across. Jane Fonda opposed the War, and as such, felt innate obligation to embellish that opposition, propagandize it, spread it, in the ways she saw fit to do so. One can only imagine her father, brave, upstanding, and secure in his own right, wincing as he learned of his daughter's "antics". Thus the thought came to my mind of "what if".......
