I'm talking about Assisted Living. At what point will this decision be made? I see new potential residents coming into the lobby with their caretakers to meet with management about arrangements for living here and most of them don't look very happy.
As of now, my memory and cognitive ability are still functioning reasonably well. I plan to live alone in my townhouse as long as possible. I have a cleaning come in every three weeks for thorough cleaning. I have a caregiver(?) come in three hours a week to help with laundry, light house work, some cooking and transport if I need a driver for Doctors visits. She saw me through my imunal therapy by running the house when I couldn't. Excellent dedicated person who needs extra work at this time. When you find good help you try to keep them. This is my back up plan to stay in my home as long as possible. When the cost of my in home care exceed assisted living costs (I have a place picked out) or I'm no longer mentally capable, I'll go.
As long as wife and I can take care of each other, mentally and health wise, we don't even look at Assisted Living at all. We keep taking our few meds, some vitamins/supplements and seem to be doing very, very well.
I agree with Cody; we will stay in our home as long as we can. The only way I'd leave that decision to someone else would be if I was completely incapacitated or demented.
@Beth Gallagher It was said "Paranoia strikes deep, into your life it will creep; Starts when you're always afraid, step out of line, the man comes and takes you "ay-way". Becoming demented is similar, but comes from within instead of without. After all, just look at me? Frank
It is a really good point @Lon Tanner I think many times we avoid the subject because it seems so far down the road when it really isn't. Until I started reading your posts, I had never even thought about the assisted living option. I still haven't made any plans, but I sure thank you for all the information.
I agree with Colorado Cody too! Our home and all we have added to it has made us very contented since we retired into it 21 years ago. It's got it all for me, and my wife is happy with her Dogs, Cats, Birds, and her Tortoise Preserve! She'll be 76 soon, and is as active and agile as a teenager! Hal
I have been a resident at this expensive facility for almost two years now and have no complaints but it does take time to adjust to staff & meal schedules as well as activity schedules. I live here because my health is such that living alone is impractible and I have no care taker. Some of the members on this forum will some day be in the same position as I was three years ago and have to make a decision on how and where to continue aging with some degree of comfort. I would be pleased to respond to any queries you may have about my experience. My life is pretty much a open book and I am not concerned about privacy.
I imagine there would be an adjustment, but there are both pros and cons. Obviously, the pros outweigh the cons in your case.
I'm glad you are content where you live @Lon Tanner and I have to admit, I'm jealous of all those find food pictures you post!
@Lon Tanner , I'm happy that you are comfortable there. Do you have an opportunity to interact with other guests socially? I mean, as in watch TV, see movies, play old folks games?
Yes there is ample opportunity via Bingo, BlackJack, puzzles etc. The Activity Director does a pretty good job of organizing activities. I don't have much in common with most of the residents, particularly the men. My hearing is still a problem but I get by better with female voices. I prefer watching Netflix, Amazon Video & TV by myself. I go to see my PC, Oncologist, Dermatologist and Urologist monthly and am taken to the appointments by the facilities vehicle. I spend much time by myself, reading & computer activity. I see my family infrequently. I would much prefer to live the life I had ten years ago, but that will never be.
