Not usually, but I allow campaigns of people who I intend to vote for to place a sign on my lawn. Usually, I put out a campaign sign for someone who ran against our Senator Susan Collins about ten years ago. He died a couple of years after that election but I'd still rather have him in that place than Collins, and the Republicans never run anyone worth voting for, probably because she claims to be a Republican.
She wins by large margins every six years, yet no one will admit voting for her. In 2012, at least half of the delegates on the floor of the Maine Republican Convention walked out on her when she came up to the podium. She wins because no one dares stand up to her in a primary because they are pressured out by the Party elite, and then they vote her because she's "better than the Democrat." She had hinted about retiring after this term because at least half of her Party hates her and now the Democrats are mad at her too. I have never voted for that woman. I'd rather write in someone who has been dead for eight years.
Never. If you put something like that on your car, you'd find your side rear view mirror kicked off. Tends to get too costly.
It gets really silly when grown people would feel justified vandalizing your house or vehicle due to political signs, but they sure will.
@Bess Barber , it's not silly. It's tragic that our country has come to that. I sometimes wonder if the Russians or, more likely, the Chinese are behind all the hatred. I browse political forums sometimes and there seems to be a pattern there to me. There is always one person who seems to be prodding the hatred. Maybe two people. Could they be plants to deliberately stir up hatred among us?
I really don't know why differing opinions drive some people to destruction or worse. I saw many "Obama" bumper stickers in the past and somehow I never lost my damn mind, threw bricks or tried to punch anyone over their (misguided) choice.
I allowed a guy running for selectman in my town to put up his(very substantial) sign but during the night it was mowed down by a large truck. He was challenging someone who blindly supported everything the town employees wanted so it was probably one of them that took it down. BTW a town employee lived across the street.
Answering the OP........No. Oh yeah, once and only once. I allowed an incumbent who was trying to retain his position as sheriff to put a sign in front of our restaurant. The guy running against him was a member of the same church we went to so he just naturally figured that since I knew he was a Christian, I’d vote for him. I told him flat that other than the fact that he went to church, I didn’t know anything about him so there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth on his part and from then on I have kept my politics pretty much to myself whilst in public. Everyone knows who they are going to vote for and for the most part, I cannot see how a dern sign with someone’s name on it is going to influence the general public in any way. I do suppose there are those who will vote one way or the other depending on who they think is going to win rather than voting for their choice based on who they believe will be best suited for an office but hopefully they are few and far between the norm. Yup, that guy has a thousand signs out there and the other one barely has any so the guy with the thousand signs must be the one I should vote for. Stupid!
I think political signs can sway some voters. Not just any helter-skelter sign but a sign by a well respected member of a community. If I see a sign supporting a candidate in the yard of someone that I know is well informed, I will definitely consider voting for that candidate. I believe that I am well respected enough in this area that a sign in my yard would make a person consider voting for that candidate.
I can see candidates for local elections wanting to get their name out there, but everyone is pretty up on who's running for president.
