What Is The Fibrous Substance In Tomatoes

When i cut open tomatoes whether from Canada, Mexico, or USofA there is a really tough substance starting around the corner. My wife calls them trees. The only tomato that I haven't found them in is the Crimson brand.

Thanks @Holly Saunders That explained it to a tee. It just seemed like a new phenomenon to me because I've always loved tomatoes sandwiches and couldn't remember having that hard substance in them.

 

I don't eat tomatoes, but people have told me they don't taste as good as they used to unless you can buy them off of a farm. Apparently, companies usually now pick them green and then put them in ripening vats or something. This has probably diminished they taste in a variety of produce and fruits. I have a really hard time finding good apples any longer.

 

I believe it is called "tomato fiber".

At one time, yes, the tomato was even regarded as a sinful fruit to eat by some early religious sects and thought to provoke one’s more lustful appetites.
That said and strangely enough, the tomato is part of the nightshade family and the rest of the plant is indeed poisonous to some degree.

 

It seems to me that more and more of the grocery store tomatoes have that fibrous center in them. It's annoying to have to "core" a tomato.

 

The ones that I got from a farm stand had none and the cones in the grocery have begun to get very small......The Crimson brand at the grocery din't have them.

 

I have started buying small grape tomatoes and Roma; they don't have the fiberous stuff in them.

 

I can't go to the smaller ones because that'd be too much work for a lunch additive. We normally have a sandwich, dill pickle and tomato for lunch.
