Maybe they aren't used to getting wet. I can't remember the last rainy game. Almost forgot about it until about a half hour ago. Just as well. It's 21-0 right now.
Update... Got all the red tip stumps sawed off close enough to the ground to suit me. Then hit a rock with the saw and dulled the new chain already. Will try sharpening again. I've got the file. It can't be rocket science, can it? All that's left of major clean up are 6 heavy chunks of wood. Don't want to drive the truck over the yard until it dries out. They are not bothering anything. There are many kudzu and English ivy vines/roots buried in the ground around there. First thing next spring I have to pounce on them with a spray gun and keep at it until they are wiped out completely. That may take all summer. I like this project because you can work on it as much as you like, whenever you like.

Hey Pam!.. Did you get to do anything about those hickory trees? The plan is to have only grass right up to the edge of the bank, at most maybe some daffodils that will die back after spring.. If they survive there I'll put out a bunch of them.. I'd like to do some repairs on the stone wall below, or at least try to make it more stable. It will give me something to do this winter.
Regarding the above photo, how do you keep any grass from growing there? I have some large rocks going down a section of my yard. I use plain kitchen vinegar, full strength, but the grass and weeds grow back.
Hi Emma! . I never thought of that. Nothing ever grew on those rocks, or anywhere near them, except English ivy, because it got no sunlight there. The vines came creeping in from the neighbors. I'll use a little {gasp} Roundup if something pops up. It should be just from seeds that blow in.
Thanks, Nancy. I remember someone else mentioning Roundup. I'll put up with the weeds before I'll use that. I did cover a section with doubled brown paper bags for at least a few months and that worked, but the grass grew back quickly when I uncovered it. Newspaper is really good, several layers, but I don't take the paper.
About 12 years ago we had both water and electric run to the barn underground in a trench. Only 2 years ago the ground began sinking where the trench crossed the lawn ... so much, and so fast, that you get a significant jolt whenever the lawnmower crosses it this summer. The lines were supposed to be 18" deep, and red clay packs well. Maybe the dirt wasn't packed tight enough way down deep?. I never gave it much thought until recently. Last Sunday the smell of coffee brewing was noticeable again, when I first opened the door of the mobile home. . Skunk?. Under the house? This summer several holes showed up where those lines exit the house. I assumed it was just the ground sinking there too. But could it be an animal digging and tunneling? Did it choose that place to dig under the house because the soil was looser there? Or could something be tunneling the whole length of the water line across the yard and making it sink? I started reading articles on rodents. Some can chew through PVC pipe, let alone electric wire, so I took a better look, dug those holes out, and tried to see where they went. Whatever has been digging didn't appear to get below the footer for the skirting (brick), but I could be wrong. It seems to be a shallow tunnel that stops just a few feet out from the house. I don't believe those holes were big enough for a skunk anyway, but I can't find any other place anything could be getting under the house. Filled the holes with dirt 3 days ago and nothing has dug it back out yet. Whatever it was must be gone. Will probably never figure out the answers to any of these questions, or the coffee smell. It's always something with the critters out there. Just imagine if all animals had opposable thumbs.
