U.S. Navy, Destroyer Escort Group in San Diego and Long Beach. 1968 -1972 active

Glad I enlisted before I graduated high school. My Draft Notice came to my parents place when I was at NTC "Boot Camp".

I volunteered for the Draft in 1960, and my Greetings arrived on the next callup.

I chose to be drafted, because the active duty term was 2 years, as compared to 3 years if I had enlisted.

I got a good duty assignment because of my Electronics Degree.

2 years Active, 4 years Reserve.

    Hal

What do you think of those that don't celebrate either Veterans Day or Memorial Day, because they don't know anyone in the military? No family or friends. There are those out there that don't and take Memorial Day as a just a day off of work.

Although I guess you didn't thank me, I'm a military vet as well. And since you are asking about military service a second time I take the liberty of replying. :)

As one would expect, I served in the East German Army because military service was compulsory. I was drafted at the age of 19 and was initially trained as a recon in an armored reconnaissance corps for 18 months and later selected to train as a scout in a long-range reconnaissance patrol for three months. Reserve: 10 years actively. Discharged as corporal, no deployment abroad.

I am the only Korean War Vet living here in Assisted Living but will put on my hat and get on the Assisted Living Bus with nine of my fellow residents that are WW 2 Vets & two that are Viet Nam Vets. My outing will be about two hours and a change of pace.

anthem-veterans-memorial-arizona-by-renee-palmer-jones-1.jpg The Anthem Veterans Memorial, located in Anthem, Arizona, is a monument dedicated to honoring the service and sacrifice of the United States armed forces. The pillar provides a place of honor and reflection for veterans, their family and friends, and those who want to show their respects to those service men and women who have and continue to courageously serve the United States.
