Seeing the funny side of things is getting to be more & more difficult. When I watched Jay Leno do his Jay Walking segment I used to laugh until I realized those are the kind of voters that buy into having government doing everything for them. Here is how I would fix the education system. We now have communication worldwide and you can see what is happening on the other side of the world in real time. So use this capability find the best teacher in the whole world on a certain subject give him everything he needs and pay him justly. Video his class and send it nationwide to all classes. Use the now teachers at a reduced wage as room monitors. You would get the highest quality teaching nationwide. We all had those special teacher in school who could get the information a crossed to the poorest child.

@Bob Kirk My daughter is helping a coworker study for her citizenship test. My daughter said she didn't know the answers to half of the questions and she was even in the gifted program in school. Apparently, they really don't teach everything in depth in school any longer. (She is 28)
When I study to get my citizenship in the DR I asked some teachers for the answers on the questionnaire and they could not answer them either. Bobby Cole the children deserve the best teacher in the world and not just a person who got a teacher certificate. The problems you said language, cultural and faith differences are not being address now.
I noticed that one of the street interviews in that Jay Leno video was a teacher. My sister-in-law is a teacher and she can't spell Louisiana. What could possibly go wrong? I suppose all kids need to know these days is that it's OK to wear a flea collar and "identify" as a beagle.
Our state of Texas is bringing in teachers from the Phillipines..a lot of them . Because there is a lack of teachers here . Also on the Core...schools that refuse to teach Core math...no state funding...least that is how or goes here.
Maybe when we were parents to school age children, we should've kept a better eye on things. It's all gotten out of hand. @Martin Alonzo I think with the use of laptops, there is no reason an actual teacher has to be present in the room. An adult needs to be in the class to monitor things, but letting kids learn online, even at their own pace, would be a great solution.

Home education played a key roll in my development. Always being on the move rendered it necessary to supplement the classroom experience with a strict study regimen even though travelling unto itself introduced a broader experience to the mix. That and nurturing our curiosity along with development of high level reading skills armed us with the necessary tools for continued growth. My formal education was eventually hampered by success. Even with opportunities presented by mentors who envisioned a potential, I chose an unlikely one for my own and was vindicated by being able to affect society within an industry dear to my heart. Teaming up with professional educators later on, presented opportunities to develop teaching programs at the high school level here in America and abroad. Being able to channel my experiences gave me a chance to share the gift of teaching to aspiring students and in so doing replicating our success. So yes, I'm a proponent for all forms of education from formal to self learning, intentional or by accident, virtual or through nature... but it goes even deeper than that!
Looks to me like our education of kids is based on our economies. Sometime I think state governments don't want public schools to have educators but baby sitters. Many of Oklahoma's teachers are going to neighboring states in order to make a living. Private schools don't seem to have the problems of public schools but then not everyone can afford a private school and that's the reason many private exist. Kids get a better education, there is better discipline, a better environment. In reality, I don't really don't know what kids ought to be taught. I would think today's students should not be taught necessarily what I was taught many years ago. We seem to be getting away from education for education sake. That seems to have fallen out of favor. It seems we are settling for some common denominator in grade twelve down. Now days maybe college should be geared to something in which we could make a living. But then I don't know beans about anything and that's seen by the way I can ramble on about nothing.
