Chrissy, please stay off the ladder. You gave me an idea, I wonder if my fire dept offer free smoke alarm fixes?
Agreed here... @Chrissy Page ... stay safe. There's always someone to do things like that even if we need to slip them five bucks. And @Ruby Begonia , sure, give it a try! And if they don't offer that service, maybe they could suggest someone or an organization that does.
My day has been like Mari's. I have been listening to the wonderful songs on the music threads. The only work I have done is made my bed. The dust bunnies are running rampant. So now I have to get to work.
In fact, it has stopped raining now, a rare but welcome occurrence. There was a nature programme on BBC last night that included a feature about the number of otters that have been rescued in Scotland. If otters aren't coping, what chance for the rest of us?
Well, I heard that they did with changing batteries, etc. so I called the number wanting to have a volunteer come and change the battery for me. So I called, told the lady what I needed. I was a little breathless because I had just gotten off the ladder and was very frustrated with not being able to get the old battery out. Gave her my address and she told me to go outside and wait for them. As soon as I got outside, a got a sick feeling that the lady must have thought I had a fire and that's why the beeping. Within a minute a hear sirens and see the fire engine coming around the corner. THREE firemen get out and I explain sheepishly that it's not an emergency and I didn't call the emergency number. Worst part is that I had just returned from visiting my daughter and my laundry was on the bedroom floor (dirty underwear) and that's the room the firemen had to change the battery in. Anyway, they were nice about it and said that they can see how I wouldn't be able to change the battery in them as it was even difficult for them. After that incident, my son flew from Illinois for a weekend and replaced them all.
Ruby and Mari, I have nobody to do these little odd jobs that require ladders. I have a few lights that have burnt out and because of the type of fixture, it's very difficult for me to do it.
LOL @Chrissy Page , Now that's the way to get things done. You get the attention of some hulky firemen, and your son comes for a special weekend with you. After son's marry, especially if they live so far away, it is a rare treat to be able to have one on one time with them. I can just see you running around that room picking up your laundry. I just realized I do not have any fire alarms at all in my home, and never have. Hmmmmm?
Thanks Ina I sometimes feel I am boring people to death, with tales of days spent enjoying a life of travel in the sun, while many others are suffering wintry weather. We had a wonderful day in the tea plantations and ended up being invited to join the party of our hosts youngest son's 8th birthday, so it's nearly 11pm here now so will post some photos tomorrow.
@Ina I. Wonder , they must be very strict in Fresno because I have one in every room plus the hallway and the entryway and those 2 are only about 2 ft apart!
Oh, @Ina I. Wonder , please see about getting at least one! I have to think that everyone who sees this is going to agree and we'll gang up on you until you have one. But seriously, very important and I hope you'll be able to swing it.
@Chrissy Page , I know they have laws here as well. It's just that this place is so old, it probably has not been inspected in my lifetime. @Lara Moss , There are so many types alarms!!!! Can they be mounted on the walls so I can reach they. Plus my house was built with the top of the doorway at least 18" below the ceilings, which is suppose to be bad because it allows the smoke to build up in a room before it can go under and past each room, thereby not setting off the smoke alarms quickly enough. @Mari North , there is a big group here, so please don't gang up on me. Maybe I can get a deal on them, because I'll need to get at least 8 or 9 of them. It makes me wonder my my insurance hasn't asked me about this. @Terry Page , I think you'll find that all of us enjoy your trips. I know I'm willing to live a bit vicariously through your pictures and narrations. Maybe we can't afford the journey, but we do appreciate the chance to dream and see these places.
Good Afternoon, All! Fighting my way through another migraine, but just got 4 litter boxes cleaned and am sitting down for a homemade pedialyte cocktail. It's overcast and blustery here today. I just realized I didn't put the bird seed out, but there's plenty spilled on the balcony, in case anyone gets super hungry. I don't think it's going to be a very productive day, but I'm impressed about the litter boxes. One more to go, but that's going to have to wait. Have a nice afternoon!!
Can't imagine needing 8 or 9. My home is L- shaped, about 2000 sq. ft., and I only have 2 smoke detectors ... one at the top and bottom of the L. That's all I've ever had. The ceiling is about 7-8 ft high and I can still reach the detectors on a step ladder. Anyone notice how these darn things always need new batteries at 3 in the morning!!!
