Maybe he's just busy. My son is a building contractor and he is always booked for months, even with the crews he has working. I can't even get him to do stuff for me, haha.

I always assume everyone is busy. Not in a hurry for this job. Don't care if he doesn't do it until September.

He has time to send 3 emails asking me to do a review, but does not have time to send 1 email saying, "OK, I'll let you know when we can schedule the job." ?

I got the ladder out today and took some zoomed pictures from the edge of the roof. They just made me want to take a closer look. If I can figure out a fool proof back-up plan to get back down, I'll get up there next time. Wish I had one of these. :D

Probably best to drop this subject. I'll figure it out.

This just gets weirder. Checked the bank and the roofer had not cashed the check for the rest of the roof job at the farm. He should have gotten it a week ago. I sent him an email asking about it.

Within the hour he sends back a text message only saying he is going to start the roof in town TOMORROW MORNING! . Would he have told me if I hadn't emailed him?

I had already decided, next time I heard from him, to ask him to go up on the other roof with me to answer some questions because I don't like a couple of things the camera showed. Thinking seriously of canceling the whole job in town.

And of all days, this is what I did this afternoon. The final 40 feet of hedge.

All this is now piled at the end of the driveway ready to load tomorrow. More than one pickup load. He says a dumpster will be here in the morning and Lowes will deliver all the materials. There is no room for all that now! More than 12 hours notice sure would have been nice. I told him to cancel tomorrow.

So while I'm typing this he calls and says he can bring his truck and haul off the limbs before the dumpster gets there, and he is willing to go with me to check the roof at the farm. Which reminds me, I have to go downtown and get a permit to park on the street. This is happening way too fast.

But I haven't paid him anything yet, not even for materials, and haven't done the review.

@Nancy Hart I seem to be missing his point too, never heard of someone wanting a review before a job. Could it be a screw job on his part, maybe he has larger, higher paid jobs lined up, and needs a lot of good reviews to get those others jobs

It is confusing. There are 2 roof jobs. One has already been done, on my parents' double wide and garage, last week. That's the one I haven't done the review on (yet). The other job is on my house in town, which apparently starts tomorrow, and I haven't given him any money yet for that.

I'm sure good reviews are important to him. I understand that. But he kept insisting, which made me suspicious.

He took extreme pains to do the superficial things well, almost too well. It occurred to me maybe they were doing a poor installation, hoping I wouldn't check, but just be so happy how everything went so smoothly. I probably wouldn't have checked, had he not kept rushing me to do the darn review.

I'll pay closer attention with this second job. I know how to get up on the roof in town and back down by myself. lol

Do you have a written contract? Is there a warranty for workmanship or materials? Did he give you receipts or copies of them?

Everything turned out well today. Got up at daylight and got my truck about half loaded with limbs, when the crew showed up and said they could just throw all the limbs in their dumpster. Problem solved. They had the old shingles off and cleaned up before noon. Finished installing the new roofing at 5:30.

It wasn't that they worked fast and careless, but that there were 10 men working---8 on the roof and 2 on the ground, and the roof isn't all that big. The teamwork was interesting to watch. GC said this crew only did roofs.

They discovered more things the previous roofer did wrong, showed me, and corrected them. One small siding job on a dormer remains, and a carpenter will stop by and finish that in the morning.

I think they did a good job. I got to talk to the crew this time. They explained some things that bothered me on the mobile home roof, and I'm satisfied with that job now.
The chimney is now nowhere to be seen! [IMG]

Out to check on Rusty, dumped the limbs just before dark. There should be no more limbs to dump this winter. :D Long day.

Glad it went well for you, Nancy. I'm always fascinated by work crews that have obviously been doing their jobs for a while. When we had our windows replaced in the house it was like watching a smoothly operating assembly line.

Did they leave a bunch of roofing nails around your houses? When we had our roof replaced a couple of years ago, the roofers used one of those industrial magnet things to pick up nails, but after they left we still found those things for months.

How is Rusty?? We need new pics. :D

Yes they ran the magnet thing around everywhere, over and over again. Cool gadget. I still found a couple of nails later, but only because they had a green plastic circle around them. One of the crew asked me if I would be interested in hiring his wife to do some house cleaning. Was he was trying to tell me something?

Rusty is definitely walking on his heels. Trimming his hooves did not help. Any pictures would be the same. He does the same thing every day. How about an older picture? Talk about airplane ears...

Goats can be shipped from Atlanta to Houston by airplane. :D

The photo-bomber was another one of our goats. His uniqueness was that he had one horn, due to a poor disbudding job on his right side. He knew how to use it to gain a couple of rungs up the pecking order ladder. We had to periodically shorten it with lopping shears. :p

Not to worry, Von. Goats have no feeling on the tips of their horns, just like your fingernails. He would never even flinch. We just removed the sharp point on the tip so it didn't do much damage when he butted another goat with it.

While searching for instructions on how to properly stagger architectural shingles during installation I got sidetracked.

    Stagger Lee

"Lee Shelton, popularly known as Stagger Lee (and other variations) ... became a figure of folklore after murdering Billy Lyons on Christmas day in St. Louis, MO, in 1895. The murder, reportedly motivated partially by the theft of Shelton's Stetson hat, inspired the song Stagger Lee".

Most well known version is by Lloyd Price in 1958.

Mr. Price, Elton John, Leon Russell, and Dr. John performed Stagger Lee in concert in 2011. Click on link for a short segment of that performance.

    THIS IS A TEST .

The little video box thingy doesn't seem to play nice with special commands in a YouTube URL.
