I really didn’t know where I could put this ad. I first thought of the new classic candy thread but no, this commercial isn’t about candy or, not necessarily so.
Then I thought of “make me laugh” but there are those who might not see the humor involved with the advertisement even though the ad is meant to be serious.

When dealing with Satire or Irony, it’s a coin toss where something might go. If this gets moved, so be it. If not, maybe others will find a commercial that has an equal standing with this TV advertisement.
In one way, I found it hilarious whilst at the same time, feeling sad thinking of the people who suffer from something that sounds the same as this product.

That was so funny, it sounded like a scripted SNL skit. :D
Wonder how it possibly helped someone to not be hungry if it had no stimulant.

The active ingredient was ‘Benzocaine” which numbed the tastebuds so a person didn’t enjoy the taste of their food as much.

I checked on the history of the company and so the story goes that they tried to change their name when AiDS was introduced to the U.S.
AIDS patients experience a very sharp change in their weight and AYDS promised to do the same thing so there was naturally an “ironic” conflict in advertising and I guess later on Purex bought the rights and whatever happened to it happened.

I wonder how well that would actually work since your stomach would still be telling your head you are hungry.
The name was unfortunate for sure. I'm curious as to why Purex would want it since they are a soap company. :D

I remember that stuff, probably from the 70's or so. It was long before the AIDS epidemic, though.

It was around 1988 when they sought the new name as the company had suffered a 50% loss supposedly due to the AIDS epidemic. Naturally, when a company advertises it’s name it doesn’t want to be confused with a deadly disease.
The British version was called Aydslim which really wasn’t much better.

You were right, @Bobby Cole. It wasn't so easy to place. I moved it to Shopping, then thought better of it, and moved it to Other Reminiscences, where we had posted threads on old print ads and similar stuff. I apologize for the confusion.

I agree Bess, it insults peoples intelligence but desperation makes you prey to, 'givers of hope.' Beauty products amuse me by stating at the bottom that 70% of 175 women said they were over the moon with the gunge.
