it's interesting - im approaching retirement and was looking at retirement housing options yesterday. I prefer to live in a community with communal activities but i had no idea the average cost of assisted living in the US is about 4k a month, according to this network https://senior-living-near-me.com/ . so i think i might choose a senior apartment instead and lead a quiet retirement with little travel (maybe just some domestic) as it's all really expensive

I live in an assisted living community in NJ. The costs of such, if you are independent, can run in the $4,000.00 per month range at the outset, but keep in mind, as you require more and more assistance from the staff members, you go up a level and it will cost you that much more. Also, unless you are ill, if you wish to be served a meal in your apartment, that too, will be an additional cost. Try for Senior Housing. If you are cash strapped, try for HUD housing as well.

By the way, welcome to the forum Giuseppe. I just looked at your profile and see you are only 58, so you would be far out of your element in assisted living. The median age in those communities is mi-80s, but I am seeing more mid-90s and most are tipping dementia these days.

Hi!~ I am one without filters here! Why at age 58 would you want to live in any "community"? You are just reaching the point in your life where you can throw off the shackles of work and responsibility! There is no time in your life when you will be more free than you are now. Kids if you have them are grown, parents most likely passed on Yet, you want to take on structure, restrictions and rules? You have 15 to 20 good years to make the most of. Do something, dust off your passport, buy an RV, a bicycle a boat,a Corvette.
Senior Housing ? You gotta be kidding!

On that side of a retirement plan, I do totally agree with you Pete. Unless a person has to do it, putting yourself into a situation that limits one’s freedom would be have to be a last ditch move.

However, if what is meant by “retirement community” involves one of the “no one under fifty allowed” resort type of estates, then that’s an entirely different situation.
I saw one of them advertised that had a golf course, tennis courts, pools, a gym, spa, high end restaurant, hiking trails and the condo’s weren’t shabby either.
Granted, it’s not my cup of tea because after about a week it would get boring but obviously some folks with a whole lot of money and do not know how to spend it really like that kind of life.
