I seriously believe that there is a lot more behind this removal of the Confederate flag than is obvious. For one thing, it is not just a flag that represented a dark time in history, as it is being represented to be.
The Civil war was not about slavery, that just became part of it.
Over two-thirds of the people living in the south did not own slaves, and there were northern states where they did have some.
George Washington had slaves. It was common in the early days of America when there was agricultural work to be done.

Originally, our states were called sovereign states, and together they were called the United States.
When the north developed into an industrial area, and the south into large farms, there was a difference in direction between the two areas.
Some of the sovereign states did not like how the Federal government was operating; so they decided to secede from the union of states. They didn't attack the north, they just wanted to withdraw from the union and be independantly governed. (sounding familiar yet?)
The federal government sent troops into the South, and was taking over one of their forts; so the southern people fought to defend their freedom.
Because they were outnumbered and much more poorly equipped for war, they surrendered and lost the war.
For all of these years since then, Confederate soldiers have been accorded the same stature and rights as Union soldiers.

    Until now.
Until now, when we AGAIN have states that are not happy with what the Federal Government is doing, and how they are controling the states.
At this time, we already have several of the states that have proclaimed their sovereignty , and more states are likely to follow.
Are we walking down that same path again ? Will the battle for a state's freedom be lost again ?
Taking away the flag of the last group that fought for their sovereignty is a good way to send a message that we are no longer free states; but are controlled by the Federal Government.

Sorry, but part of the main reason there was the Civil War was due to Slavery. Yes, there were other matters involved as well, but slavery was one of them. You can say what you want about the Confederate Flag, but for me a flag fying on a flag pole is an honor. Its something that should only be given to a flag significant to a country at that particular point and time. For the United States the flag would be the American Flag and each invidividual state flag. The Confederate Flag no longer deserves that honor. Sorry, I can't condolne flying this flag any longer. So, placing it in a museum for me is a good compromise. It is a part of history, regardless of how any of us want to interpret it, but for me it no longer has that honor of being flown.

So, @Hannah Davis , what you are saying is that for the last 150 years, it was fine for people to display their Confederate flag; but now that we have a mind-control wacko zombie that killed people and waved the Confederate flag, it is a disgrace ? All of our military veterans who were in the civil war were given the stame status as any other American soldier, and no one was protesting about it until now, either.
Regardless of race; people loved "The Dukes of Hazzard", and it was one of the most popular programs on television for many years.
We have ships that are named after Confederate Generals, for heaven's sake.

I stand by my opinion that the reason that this is being pushed right now, is simply because (again) we have a lot of people who do not like what the federal government is doing, and we do not want to lose our freedoms. If it comes to secession to keep our freedom, I think there is a good chance that this will happen again. Several states have already declared their sovereignty, and more will be following suit.

But Hannah, There were slaves in this country under the English flag when we were still the Colonies. Then there were slaves under the United States flag in both the south and the north long before the Civil War. The Confederate flags are part of our history. I've had relatives that fought and died for the Confederate States. Just about any nation you can think of has committed horrible acts of one kind or another while flying their countries flag. Do you think we should just eliminate all flags?

There are no Americans alive today who have ever been a slave in this country. Black people remember their heritage as they should, both the good and the bad. Everyone should remember their own heritage. A flag is merely a piece of cloth and has never hurt anyone.

Too many people are just too damned sensitive about everything these days.

Africa held African slaves, for that matter. Also, more of the slaveholders supplying slaves to the United States were based in Maine than anywhere else.

Iran, on the recent Al-Quds Day rally, tens of thousands burned American, Israeli, Saudi and British flags.
While in the heat of their hatred and delusions, they chanted: "Down with America! Death to Israel!"

Are the great people of United States of America fulfilling Iran's mantra of destruction and hate? Shouldn't America be standing together for the love of their nation and its legal citizens?!

Americans behaving in this savagery are putting their nation and fellowmen in a dangerous and vulnerable position for terrorist attacks.

Believe it or not there is a confederate flag flying proudly in a little town in Canada up near Peterborough, Ontario.

It's in a RV camp and the owner of the camp is and always will fly that flag alongside the Stars and Stripes and a Canadian Maple Leaf.

This is all based on that mental illness called politico correctness. We have to do everything their way because they claim that is the only way. It has been taught in the schools and now those people are starting to make their mark on the world. This is a sickness brought to you by the public education system.

I live in a town of only a couple of thousand people, yet there are now three houses that regularly fly the Confederate flag. I don't know any of them personally, but friends have told me about the first one who began flying it, who flies a very large Confederate flag. He was born and raised in Maine, and has no relationship with the South and it's not intended as a statement of racism, but he's angry over all of the history banning that's going on around the country. That's probably true of the other two, as well.

I think it the quiet majority ever came out it would be the biggest crowd you have ever seen. I remember in London England the crowds of people in the streets for unity with the EU but the quiet majority went to the election that showed an exactly opposite to the crowds in the streets.

I think those white families who have had roots in the south for generations have an emotional attachment to the stars & bars because they had relatives who fought under that flag, and disrespect for it disrespects them.

Well Ed all I can say is I have no respect for traitors. Or relatives or descendants of traitors that do not realize that they were defeated on the field of battle and on the world stage.
