    Hello all. My name is Wallace Roberts and pleased to meet you all in advance.

    l will be 62 years old next month, and will be retiring from my current position as Senior Attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice sometime in 2021. I am finished with the legal profession and want to do something different, but as yet, I have not decided on my next move. The original plan was to actually retire in 2020, and spend time traveling domestically and abroad, and of course I had cruises, concerts and other in person events planned. But that is obviously not going to happen in the current environment so I decided to work for another year if for nothing else to keep myself busy. So as part of my planning for the next chapter in my life, I am coming to this chat forum to get some ideas on what has worked for others, particularly a person with my legal background and skillset. I would like to continue working in some capacity, perhaps part time, but not interested at this time in teaching. Thanks for reading my post and for whatever ideas or other thoughts you'd like to add to my post.

    Welcome, Wallace!

    For me, in semi-retirement, staying within my chosen field, Arboriculture, has worked well: I can make a few bucks while consulting in a field I know very well.

    Perhaps you could do volunteer work, at a Legal Aid office, once you brush up on the types of legal issues that might be experienced by everyday folks. You'd have great flexibility in the time you spend at the office, I would imagine, so you'd be able to travel, albeit within the confines set forth by the current pandemic, should it persist in our world.

    Welcome to our small community @Wallace Roberts.
    We have a myriad of professions represented by some really fine people here but the legal department is indeed lacking.
    May I be so bold to ask, what is your specialty in law?

    Welcome Wallace. I wouldn't jump right back into the workforce part time right away. You may find something that will keep you busy and enjoy at the same time. You also may find that just laying around isn't so bad either once you had a chance to try it.

    Welcome, Wallace!

    Were you working in DC? I moved to a county in between Charlottesville and Richmond in 2010 after living in Vienna (Fairfax County) from 1963.

    I can tell you that any part time work you might find is going to be highly dependent on where you retire. I slouched into retirement when I got laid off from the Northern Virginia job I was telecommuting to from here, and had Job Market shock that the rest of the world is not Metropolitan DC. Even the state capital is sorely lacking any depth, outside of retail and banking. I couldn't even stir up a short-term consulting job.

    I've used my business skills in a few non-profits that I've enjoyed being with, but those have been non-paid positions. The local independent charities could likely use someone of your background, while the individual chapters of the nationwide groups (like Habitat) will have their own legal counsel driving things from HQ. If you stay in the DC area, you should be able to easily find something to do, especially with your Federal government ties. Outside of that, you might have to shift lanes a little.

    Anyway, welcome aboard! We'll see you around.

    Hello from New Jersey, Wallace. If you have a hobby you really liked as a youngster, you might take some time and pursue it with a modern eye. That is always something I have learned from those who are retiring and want something different. Looking at the changes over the years gives one a different perspective. We all eventually find something that catches our fancy. 117304065_124838015984994_9193191409347253533_n.jpg

    @Wallace Roberts

    Good to make your acquaintance, Wallace! Our interests and careers are decidedly different, mine technical exclusively, but opposites produce interesting thoughts.
