I was really shocked to see the extreme caption profanity on these shows with main stream actors. It does not add realism to the show, in fact, it's irritating and distracting. Incest with one's mother seems to be popular with the CAPTIONERS.

I don't understand. Don't the captioners merely type what the dialogue is? They shouldn't censor it.

Exactly. The Closed Captioning is simply on-screen display of the actual dialogue. Problem is not the captioners but the script writers.

    OK That figures
I am not for censoring either. I am doing some checking on this issue.

I'm sure you're not for censoring. I should have said what Beth said...they are providing an accurate rendition of the scripted dialogue.

This is why I like watching older movies. They have substance. These days, it's all about special effects and shock value. It's the functional equivalent of people who excessively use vulgarities because there's no substance there.

I just can't believe that certain actors would utter some of the things that I read them saying so it must be the script writers as the culpirts.

Yeah, a lot of writers include ultra profanity because they believe the public likes it and/or the shock value to others will generate publicity that will get people watching the show.

The popular Veep show with Julia Louis-Dreyfus was so profanity ridden that I was disgusted within the first ten minutes, and never watched it again. I'm often told that I swear too much, so you can imagine how much profanity was in that show. It ran for seven seasons, I think.

So much culpability to go around.

It's emblematic of this nation...the race to the bottom.
And if you choose to not race, you'll be dragged there.

I have made post on another thread about excessive use of foul words.
Bottom line the writers do not have a broad base knowledge of language, or no creativity.
Think of all the shows and comedians who dont use such profanity on or off screen- yet they are popular and wealthy also.
I tried watching new show latley..in the three mintues of openning on pilot...the F word nine times.
And as I said before there is an art to cursing...just like the delivery of the punch line in a joke.;)

The flip side to the "lack of creativity" verbal profanity is "lack of creativity" action profanity. I took a date to see Total Recall back in 1990. It's based on a Philip K. Dick sci fi story (I use to read a bit of his work), so I thought it would be an interesting movie.

Right out of the gate there's a scene of people on an escalator being machine-gunned down. Lots of people. People who had no context or frame of reference. Just the bloody carnage of strangers (likely credited as "Body #1", "Body #2", etc.) We sat through the first 10 minutes of the movie, then got up and walked out. It's trash.

One series, Yellowstone, we watched completely, even though the "F" bomb was used a whole lot. Same thing happened in the series, The Ranch, with Sam Elliott. A whole lot of "F" bombs.

We have the movie, Last Vegas, and were sort of shocked at some of the language that was in it. Kevin Cline even dropped the "F" bomb in it.

If an actor/actress doesn't want to go the way the script is written, they don't get the job.

Well, Al, it can be very surprising just how many Seniors use the language used in movies. We don't, but if a movie is good enough, we will try very hard to tolerate it, even with the language.

Another movie we own is, To Paris With Love, and boy does John Travolta use the language. Not a lot, be enough.

Remember, Al, we are no long living back in the Lassie and Rin Tin Tin days when this kind of language wasn't allowed in movies or tv shows. Boy, have the times changed!

Actually, we won't make friends with anyone who uses foul language. Our choice, but we like it that way.

I'm sorry but I quit a job because of the foul language. What's wrong is always wrong. No matter what decade you're in
