New member here just wanting to say hi. Tripped over your forum site the other day, and I got caught up in a lot of your interesting conversations. I was actually looking at the state of health of our local senior centers at the time. A lot of them have been shut down because of the virus so thought I'd give it a try. Seemed a good idea anyway as I don't really care for driving anywhere these days--getting too scary out there on the roads for me. So anyway, hi and hope you all have a good day. John
Good Morning John....I live in southern Maine...Winter is bad but not awful like northern Maine..We have an idiot for goverbnor so we've been severely impacted by COVID.
Welcome to the forum, John. I live in central Virginia (between Richmond and Charlottesville.) I, too, have been hankering for road trips, but my main concern is not knowing if there will be any accommodations along the way. So were you looking at facilities as your possible next residence?
Welcome John and where do you hail from? I have to know otherwise I don’t know whether to say Hi, Hello, Greetings, Howdy or Wave. Either way, choose one and I’ll be like a politician and say I did that. Or didn’t. Or maybe I did or didn’t. Anyway, I’m here in Alabama so Howdy!
Hi John. Thanks for the welcome. My eyes are my biggest concern anymore. By 'senior center,' what I meant was a place where those over 65, or so, can go to socialize, play games/shoot pool, exercise classes; that sort of thing. They also usually have lunch, etc.--not sure if you have those in your area. My wife and I live in a condo by a pond which we like a lot. Not really looking for road trips at the moment. The wife's also disabled in a wheelchair from diabetes mostly I think, so I stay pretty busy.
Thanks Bobby. I hail from Florida. Would like to move--especially in the summer. Been here (native) all my life but it's not familiar to me anymore.
Hi Cody. I drive very locally. I have a 2005 minivan which I put a wheelchair ramp in just after I bought it. It still runs good. Only has 64k miles on it. We stay close to home where things are familial. If we have to we can use city handicapped transportation that will come to the door. I guess you could say I drive from memory
What part of Florida? We lived in Jacksonville for 10 1/2 years, before returning to Colorado in late 2019. We still ask ourselves "why did we leave Colorado in the first place?". Oh we done a number of things when we lived in Florida, including a visit to Sea World, Disney World, Hard Rock Casino in Tampa and a trip to the Key West. Endured a few Tropical Storms and two hurricanes. Matthews outer bands went over us and Irma went right over us. Funny, because, when we first got to Jacksonville, we were told that, due to the location, hurricanes don't hit there. Well, that wasn't true! And, as far as the beach goes, we only went to Jacksonville Beach three times in 10 1/2 years we live in Jacksonville. We have found out that we love the mountains of Colorado much more than the beaches of Florida! Anyway, we don't miss the humidity, all of the Geico lizards and those awful cousins of the coach roach. We also got our share of t-storms with lots and lots of lightning. On Dec. 25, Christmas morning, it was actually snowing in our apartment complex. Have it on video. But, all-in-all, we are glad to be back in Colorado, even with the winters. Elk, livestock, ranches and rodeo. Heck, all thru those 1/2 1/2 years of Florida living, we still kept our winter parkas that we bought when we lived in Colorado before. Sure glad we kept them. Oh, one last thing, wife and I are both Diabetic II and on medication for that. We do fine. We are both in our early 70's. One thing for sure, Florida and the South isn't for everyone and ended up definitely not being for us.
Hi Cody. Yes, we're close to Jax. We do have our share of t-storms. The Jax area is in sort of a good location. We've had a lot of serious near-misses of a direct hit in the past, that could have been a lot worse I think if it hadn't been for that indented coastline and ocean current of NE FL. The storms seem to be getting much stronger these days, however, and I hope our time isn't running out. Colorado would probably be my top choice if we ever did decide to move. If not there, maybe Denmark
