I totally agree with you about this, and people that live in the country and see these dogs should understand that they are not lost, just roaming. When I lived in Idaho, there were farm dogs that learned to chase deer, and even sheep or cattle if they could get them to run. It is a general practice that farmers/ranchers will shoot any dogs that are found running deer or livestock, and everyone understands this . Most people will let the owner know about the dog running deer, if they recognize the dog, so that the owner can contain the dog at home; but sometimes, it is a dog that is unknown where it lives.

It seems to me like it has become the “thing to do” to pick up any dog that is on the street and not in a yard, and then take it to the dog pound. I belong to the Facebook group for lost dogs in Huntsville, and people are always advised against keeping or rehoming the dog, and told to turn it in immediately. Who knows how many of these dogs would have just gone home on their own if left alone ?
I used to have an Afghan Hound, and he would run for miles (we once saw him almost 10 miles away from home), but he always came home when he got tired of running.

I had no internet or cell service all day, and just got it back. I am on Verizon wireless "Jet Paks."

Apparently, Verizon wireless service was out all the way from near Charlottesville to Richmond...that's a swath over 60 miles long (and goodness knows how wide) where no one had cell or wireless internet service all day long. That's pretty odd...usually it's a single tower, not a miles-long string of them.

The service here is surprisingly pretty good. I got lucky that I am in a very rural spot, yet the signal is strong throughout the entire house and just about everywhere on my property (except for heavily wooded gulleys.)

Man, I was having withdrawals for a while.

Sounds like these people do not know about the breed-that is the main problem. They probably think they are helping- just guessing. I am on Nextdoor here also. Nextdoor is only for community and neighborhood things. We have issues here with people who want to debate politics, and everything but what the site was created for. It does come in handy for me.

The Great Pyrenees if properly trained are not pets and not wanderers. They stay with the livestock they are trained to protect. They are used mainly for sheep and never lose sight of the flock. Never! Pups are raised with the lambs and know their duty and do it well. If they were wandering they were either raised to be pets or partial pets (big mistake) or older and suffering senility. I would highly advise the owners to keep them in a fenced yard or give them away as pets to someone that will care for them.

There's a farm a mile up the road that has had this breed ever since they have been in business. I've been over there. Those dogs are not pets. They've wandered onto my property before.

I don't know what the specifics are with those two that were the subject of that encounter. Even if they were not trained properly, I don't think it's anyone else's responsibility (or right) to corral dogs just because they are not with a human and take them to a shelter. It's a weird thing to do. They're not "lost." The only exception might be if the dogs were creating a nuisance or presenting a danger. But just walking around??? Leave them be.

I agree, but if they are working dogs and wandering then any good owner would want to know. Anyone could simply check their tag and call the owner that their dogs were off their property. No reason to impound them. In Oregon, we have a dog at large law and if loose dogs are reported then a law officer will respond and notify the owner.

The trouble in the country with dogs at large is many times they gather in packs and chase livestock and game. Even the best dogs seem to give in to this temptation if the opportunity is presented. I think it is foolish for anyone to pick up a wandering dog. I would simply report it and let the animal enforcement officers do their job. Dogs are smart and can be trained to know the area they must stay in. When I see a repeat wandering dog, I see a careless or lazy owner.

In my case, my gripe is the neighbor that purposely lets his dog out after I go to bed. It always poops in my lawn. Nowhere else, not his or other neighbors, just mind. He refuses to accept any responsibility saying it wasn't his dog. I was up a couple of times and saw it was his dog. No one else lets their dog loose around here. Nothing can be done except setting up a video and recording it and then have the enforcement officer write him a citation for a dog at large. To avoid all that hassle, I just shovel it up and catapult it over to his porch where he steps. I have done this for years with no results other than a feeling of fighting back. He just steps around it and lets it dry then blows it off into his lawn to be mowed up.

Gotcha. I agree, we all have a right to protect our property and families. And I loathe irresponsible owners. It's as though the humans enjoy being agitating S.O.B.s and their critters are their [unwitting] ambassadors. When I lived outside of DC, getting relief from a barking dog was impossible. Neither the cops nor the game warden nor the SPCA not the Humane Society could (would) do a darned thing for a German Shepard that was chained up and barking literally 7 x 24 x 365 in the middle of summer at a place that was being renovated by a non-resident contractor. The guy stopped by the property maybe 2-3 times a week while I was keeping its water dish full.

I mentioned that I've had dogs on my property here from a farm 5 miles away (in addition to the G.P.s from across the way.) They had collars with the phone# on them, so I called the guy just to let him know his critters were safe & sound and they were not an issue for me. I told him I put out fresh water, but not food (so they would go back home when they got hungry.) He drove over and got them. It was no big deal.

The most passive-aggressive thing I thought of doing is bathing just one of the wandering G.P.s to make it shiny white (there were 3 of them and they were all funky looking) and maybe putting a bow on it, then sending them all back home. ;)

The sun seems to be doing strange things lately, and apparently we had a satellite outage a couple days ago that lasted 6 seconds or something like that. The spooky thing is that NASA is removing data from the public view on some of the solar monitors. It makes one curious as to why that is being done. That might screw up cell service, but I don't know why it would be limited and not more widespread.

All the LGDs that I know of here stay with their flocks or herds and do not wander. Alaska allows property owners to shoot loose dogs on their property if they are causing trouble of any kind. You just have to "use enough gun" (Robert Ruark) or the Troopers will get you for cruelty. If you shoot a dog with .22, you will be fined, but with a 30.06, nothing will be done. It does keep stray dogs under control. Sometimes the dogs will join a local wolf pack if they are not eaten by the wolves, and then they become a real problem.

Ranting is one thing, but raving is something else entirely!

The two words can compliment each other and also be nearly synonymous and then in another context be opposing.
A raving lunatic can rant all he wants because that’s what raving lunatics do.
A raving beauty, on the other hand shouldn’t be a ranting beauty now should she but if she is ranting on about her looks there are some circles where that is acceptable behavior which would make her a ranting raving beauty.

A not so secret teenage party is called a rave but no one rants about it except know nothing parents because it is after all secret which they should rant on about and include the police. Then the rants are about the rave and the use of handcuffs which is all the rave if they are furry handcuffs and were probably used by some parents who raved about it until they found out that furry handcuffs have the potential to bring about ranting babies who later grow up to go to a rave.

    Next rant please.........

Maybe we need a new thread called today's raves. No rants allowed!

I think you mean "We need a new category". Threads are individual and personal. Categories are collective.

The category that is currently being used is, “not sure where it goes”. And, though a thread is started by a singular person it is open for discovery and comment so that makes it public and certainly “shouldn’t” be taken personally if there are opposing comments.
