IMG_0968.JPG IMG_2472 (2).JPG Currently I have four rescue animals with special needs. Two are cats and two are dogs. My oldest is Wesley who is nine. He is a pit bull cross. I adopted him when he was 8 mo. old after he had been adopted and returned. He had also been abused at some point in his past. He isn't the brightest bulb in the box. It took me three years of daily reinforcement to get him to lift his left front leg so I could put his harness on him. We just learn the basics. He had lived with my other dog, Maggie until she passed at the age of 16 back in 2017. He became very clingy and I decided he needed a dog pal. It took me 6 months to find a dog that didn't want to eat him. I finally found Teddy (I call him Billy because it seems like every small furry dog is called Teddy.) He is a pure bred Lhaso Apso with a lot of problems. He was not quite 2 when I got him. He is now five. He did not know how to be a dog. I suspect he was carried nearly eveywhere. He did not go outside. When I was told he was crate trained I suspect that meant he did his business in a crate. I was told that he doesn't like men. (I wonder why.) Very scared. Spent considerable amount of time gaining his trust, house breaking etc. He also had a vomiting problem and is on medicine for that. Also a skin condition.
My cats are Topper (he is a Tuxedo) and Martin (named for Doc. Martin -PBS) is medium long haired black. They entered the shelter system as kittens and never left just got shipped from shelter to shelter. They are now five years old and I adopted them in the last 8 months. I got Topper because my favorite cat died in 2019 and even after 18 months I couldn't get over the loss. The pain just kept getting worse. I have had many, many animals over the years but none that I couldn't put to rest. So I decided to look around for a cat and ran across Toppers pic at a local humane shelter. I went to see him in person. They had over 100 cats at the shelter waiting for adoption. I saw Topper first (I had already made up my mind he was the one) but I looked at all the others before committing. I brought him home to my elderly cat and after adjusting they got along fine and my old boy got a new lease on life for a while. A few short months later my old cat died. I tried Topper as an only cat but decided his life would be happier if he had a companion so back to the shelter I went. They asked me if I would be interested in his brother. Brother? He has a brother? None of their story was converyed to me when I got Topper. So I brought brother home. Martin did not adapt as well as Topper but with work he is becoming more social and less frightened. Both are wonderful cats. I can't understand why no one ever wanted them.

Thank you for sharing your story about your pets, @Martha Ferris ! If you look in this section of the forum, several of us have shared stories of beloved pets that we have , or once did have.
They become an integral part of our lives, just like children do.
