When I drove in the driveway today, I startled the gray cat, who had run as far as the railroad tracks by the time I got out of the car.

I called to him, "Where are you going? I'm not going to hurt you."

    He stopped.

"Do you want something fresh to eat? Don't go away, and I'll get you something. I'll be right back."

He was waiting by the back landing, which is where I feed them, when I came out with a bowl of canned food for him.

Gonna make you beg for it, as you put out the food. I guess they never break character, you gotta give them that.

The black cat just let me pet him. He was sitting on our front steps when my wife came home. He ran, and I found him on our back steps. For a few minutes, he let me pet him. Then I noticed he had a wound on his neck and, when I tried to look at it more closely, he got scared and left. It's hard to tell because I couldn't see it carefully but it looked to be a small round hole, like a BB, although I suppose it could have been made from something else. Another time, he'll let me look more closely. He's not my cat, but I see another vet bill in my future.

I figured he wasn't feral, and neither is the gray one, although he's been on his own for at least a couple of years, if not more. While he was letting me pet him, he was trembling, and this is the one that all of the other cats (except for a couple of kittens) are afraid of.

We use to pick up strays cats and dogs and have the vet fix them so no unwanted kittens and puppies then find a home, all our animals were fixed too. Can't afford that now and only did the otheres a few times. It really hurts to see all the animals in shelters.

I've mentioned before that back in the 70s I did volunteer work at an independent shelter. When I ended up with a puppy and a kitten, I had to quit.

I guess many of us have harbored fantasies about having large acreage in the country with a huge barn and unlimited resources so we could give them all a home.

So true I know my mother tried it so I lived my first 14 years with sometimes dozens of cats and dogs. A service station use to save burnt motor oil for us to use on mangy dogs mama kept picking up and treating.Amazing how good it worked before they addedall those extra chemicals to it.It would probably kill the dog now. Mama found out she couldn't do it after years of trying. Dogs wouls have puupies in the woods full of maggors, cats fighting got too much.So she ended up taking them to shelter and cried all the way.We can't even save man from trials and fate much less animals. We just do what we can do and time and chance happenth to us all is the way I see it.We only have animals that need a home like roadside pippies or animal shelters. And only what we can afford to care for both finacially and physically.I became allergic to cats in the house and in the woods they run off or fight with other cats. No longer able to pay vets.

AWESOME ! ! The black cat looks like he is so happy to finally be getting petted. It took him a while to feel secure enough, but now he will probably be following you around when you are outside.

I thought the gray one was going to be the first to let me pet him.

It's likely the black one did, too.

I haven't seen the black cat since he let me pet him four days ago. Oh, he still comes around because I see him on camera, but he hasn't come around while I have been outside. Then again, it's been raining a lot.
