Havens Bros Mobile Diner - Providence, RI

"On January 10, 1893, Irish immigrant Anne P. Haven first opened her own horse-drawn lunch wagon in Providence. The business, named after her brothers, stayed in the family until sold to Albert Mollicone in 1953. Mollicone ran the business for 35 years before turning over the reins to Salvero Giusti and Jack Ferry in 1988. It is the oldest continually operating diner on wheels.

The current silver box (refurbished in the mid-2000s) was purchased by the Havens in 1949 from the Fred W. Morse Company in Providence."

Imagine yourself in Charlotte, NC, standing near the intersection of Central Ave and Plaza St, mid 1940's ...

    LARGER AERIAL PHOTO

The diner was a converted street car owned and operated by Gus Thevaos. Gus's son, Peter, notes about the aerial photo - "It was taken in the mid 40's during WW2. My dad's diner is in the center. To the right was my uncle John's Ice Cream Store. Our house is in the background and Dad's '42 Ford Coupe is in the drive. To the left is Ed Garmon's Pure Oil Station, now Fuel Pizza."
