Unfortunately, my wife thought it took up too much space so it's been put away somewhere where God couldn't even find it, while I'm back to making grilled cheese sandwiches in the broiler.
I have a cast iron griddle I use for that kind of stuff. I put the lid to a stainless steel pan on top of the sandwich to hold in the heat and melt the cheese faster. Like Ken, I've always used my toaster oven to make toast. I just don't eat enough toast to warrant a dedicated appliance for the job.
That's what my wife uses but I find the broiler to be easier. When I try to make a grilled cheese sandwich on a griddle, the toast ends up overdone and the cheese isn't completely melted. We have a couple of cast iron griddles, which we also use for pancakes, tortillas, and so on.
Find a saucepan lid that's large enough to cover the sandwich. It holds in the heat. I've never though of broiling a sandwich. Using a pan on the stove is a legacy thing from my childhood I've never changes. I've bought 2 electric sandwich griddles (George Foreman, Black & Decker, etc.) in my life. I gave the last one to Goodwill, new & unused. Friggin' marketing works. Regarding the griddle: I started doing bacon & eggs on it...flipping the eggs is so much easier in a pan with no sides.
i've enjoyed many a shop or worksite meal prepared with a heat gun... COOKING WITH A HEAT GUN: SEARING MEAT, ROASTING MARSHMALLOWS WITH SUPER-HOT AIR found them especially handy for getting the charcoal red hot real fast. not bad for melting cheese and making toast too. don't get me goin' about the poached eggs and other great hot frothy things you can make with a steam cleaner.
I recently bought a heat gun at Harbor Freight, and I cook sous vide. You have no idea the beast you have just unleashed. I have a steam cleaner and once used it to bend wood: I cut a semi-circle from a piece of shelving and attached the bracket to the bottom. I wanted to dress up the cut front edge so I took my steam cleaner, shoved a piece of pipe on the end, put wood trim in the pipe, then locked the cleaner's trigger down with a tie wrap so it was always ON. It took a few fills of water to get the wood soft enough, but I finally got it done...it's a pretty tight radius. I have a pair of them guarding my living room.
All my kitchen counter appliances are Cuisinart. I like them all and the toaster hasn't ever given me any disappointments. I would recommend it. It comes in either a dark or light color. I won it as a door prize at a store grand opening. The only thing I have ever won. The store had an $89 tag on it, but I see they are $59 on Amazon.
I went on a fat lowering diet a while back. I made toast in the toaster then put some of our best cheddar between the two pieces and put it in the micro wave. Kinda missed the butter on the outside. But now I've cut out bread so....
I use a little margarine. But you can use butter, or if you don't want the fat and calories you can use a cooking spray like Pam spray.
Back when I got divorced [1972] , low on money I bought a cheap two slice toaster. LOL ... my first new appliance. Do not even remember the brand but .... That thing lasted until just about a month ago ! 51 years .... Hope the new one last [half] that long.
The best frilled chasse are made3 on a flat grill in the restaurants or at home in a frying pan, with a little bit of oil to help keep the butter from browning too soon and then lots of butter. The cheese melts in the middle real well.
