So…..I guess that means that skinny dipping is Totally out of the question. Note to myself: Build hot tub for next year.
hope ya'll 'r stayin' safe out dare... been spending some time out in this harshness wearing a mac200, the gear for helicopter-down emergencies. the mustang survival mac200 semi-dry suit with it's helical zipper going from lower front (left thigh) to upper back (left shoulder). it's built to survive a freezing fireball but you have to vent in anything above 0°f (minimum activity.) eliminating the middle layer of kevlar wrapped floatation / insulation adds 20°f but lightens the suit and offers more freedom of movement (good to about 0°f.) just the thing for when it gets nippy.
It's so brutal here in Central Florida that I had to dig out my winter t-shirt. Currently 60F and overcast, will get down to mid 30's tonight. One of my brothers lives in Central Ohio, and it was -7F there this morning.
all i can think about is this cold...twice out to the feral cat shelter..still only 2 in there...wind blowing so hard but they have another structure windbreak...had to get down on the ground to get bowls out...put hot ones in..i go again in a while...0 degrees and wind is massive
Cold weather definitely reduces the insects the following year, even here where they are adapted. Slugs and snails are reduced as well. Nothing will be eliminated though.
Still in the 20's but we are snug and warm. Apparently Gov. Abbott made good on his promise to shore up the Texas power grid. Below freezing for the next couple of days, but sunny and gorgeous outside. Still kind of windy.
The wind is horrible. Not as bad in the outbuildings as I thought it would be. I made a fire this morning for barn cat who spent the nite in the barnhouse. Fed him and went to leave--he ran out the door and didn't come back. But when I went to build another fire for him if he came back tonite, he came in and did not seem cold. I don't know where he was. Maybe in igloo out back? The coals were still glowing so just rebuild the fire and gave him dinner. Do we worry for nothing? Two more days of horrible cold to go.
i need nerve tonic over these critters...our lil dog..peaches..compounds it...we put boots on her ...2 coats..paw carried her out as usual..did this 3 x's today...as i did the ferals...bird things...water... Little thing never went...now she's frettin. got pup pads different locations...she'll need to go on em.. they're already talking about more cold systems brewing in Canada...hon... all I can think about is the dangerous cold..i pray ya'll and your lil critters will come thru it... before next one...we will beef up a few things
My neighbor called and told me his sister made extra beef stew for me...but I had to go get it. Daggone it, it's dark, it's 16°F, and it's windy!!!! And this is a "country neighbor," not a "walk right next door neighbor." On the way out, I saw that my propane grill and my smoker got blown off of the elevated porch...they're on the ground and they're trashed. They both have covers on them, so I guess the wind caught them. That stinks. I bought the grill off of Craigslist a few years ago...I really liked it.
I had a box of junk sitting on the porch. The wind was so strong here overnight, the box and all the stuff in it had blown all over the porch by morning. Even though the porch is screened. It's too cold to clean it up. I'll wait til tomorrow. Every time I put water out for the birds today, it was frozen over in an hour or so.
I have a heated bird bath, but it's not set up. I used to have it under the tree with all the feeders, and I never saw a single bird in it, nor did I ever see evidence of use.
I need to get one. What is yours like? How does it work? I think most bird baths are too deep. The chickadees here will take a bath in a large jar lid. lol
the wind has been ripping things here all nite...all day ..on and on..we don't know full mess yet...sorry bout those cookers..save some parts..grill maybe...we used a grate out of propane grill..it was solid iron...put on top of fireplace grate...be warm now...oh...bugs in firewood..we drug a new behers trash can in..solid lid..filler up!....when we don't want to go to the firebox on porch
You [obviously] need an extension cord for it. I believe the plug comes out through a hole cut in the pedestal just under the bath, and you plug the extension cord into it there. Or it might thread through the bottom of the pedestal. Mine is pretty shallow. I cannot recall where I got it. Nothing comes up in a search on Amazon or Walmart. Tractor Supply sells a heater for a bird bath but not one with a built-in heater. This is gonna drive me nuts. I used to also have a watering thing that hung from a tree. It was like a large plastic jar hanging upside down with 3 little troughs on the part that screwed onto it. It never seemed to get any use, either. I have creeks all around my property, so the birds probably get better water there than what I offered.
