I’m not always honest. I need to warn people when I am going to be honest so they pay attention to what I’m saying. All other times, when I don’t divulge my impending honesty, I don’t tell them I’m going to be dishonest. They have to guess. “Really?” they say, as if I should have told them I was going to be honest and didn’t tell them so. “Would I lie about a thing like that?” I’d reply, which presents them with a dilemma: it’s now up to them to decide if I’m lying or nor. It might be best if I say nothing but that might be taken either way. Silence might be the omission of truth, which could be assumed as lying or not. It’s probably reasonable that everyone lies and it’s up to the individual to verify what is offered.
Whether it is reasonable or not, yes as written in Scripture "all men are liars" /out of context but is pertinent, btw/ ... Yet even the messengers of the Creator warned: do not believe us if we lie.
Whatever, Jeff. Thanks for dropping by. Unfortunately, any reference to scriptures and a creator is wasted on me. For me, that’s as good as lying. Harry Frankfurt in his book on lying suggests there are three main reasons why people tell less than the truth: 1. They are hiding the truth. 2. They are unaware of what the truth is. 3. They don’t care either way. They just make stuff up. This is the one he calls Bullshit. got any idea where religion fits?
The intro is indeed interesting. So far as introductions go, a personal declaration of one’s rather gymnastic approach in the arena of honesty is a first. That said, welcome to the forum Tom.
I don’t have a great memory so I try to be truthful. The exception would be if I’m dealing with someone who crossed the line to being an “enemy”.
I think in time Tom will reveal himself as a former championship juggler. Welcome to the forum Tom. You will find lots of things to juggle here.
I have no idea what he means by that and I have no idea who he is. I don't use this avatar anywhere but here.
Uh-huh…..when I look at the number of acts we have in this circus, I guess we could use another juggler. Now we just need a bearded lady and a 3 headed goat.
