You have left out the fact that the South seceded from the Union over the issue of SLAVERY, "States Rights" and heavy tarrifs. The South fired the first shots of the Civil War when the confederates attacked Fort Sumpter, thus starting the war. It is unlikely that issue of "States Rights" and tarrifs would ever have ended in war. Thus, the issue of the alleged "right" to OWN human beings was the primary cause of the war.

The issue of "loss of property' and the carpetbaggers did not occur until AFTER the Civil War.

I totally agree with those who say the confederates were traitors. When any person , or group, attempts to overthrow the United States by violent means, that is a traitorous act. TREASON: violation of the allegiance owned to ones country.

States rights! How horrible to think that anyone other than the federal government should have rights! My God, what's next? Are individuals going to have rights too? This nation was created for the federal government, and it's preposterous to think that anyone else should have anything to say about anything!

I was 82nd Airborne all the way and I served at Ft. Bragg……not Fort Liberty.

I will guarantee that not ONE soldier I served with at Ft. Bragg had a single thought about who the post was named after and to be quite frank, I know of no one who was with the 82nd or trained as a Ranger at Ft. Bragg who isn’t proud to have served and trained there.

I will bet a dollar to a donut that not one politician that is behind the name change ever served in the 82nd.
It just shows me again and again that politicians just aren’t happy unless they are politik’n’ about something even if it’s an absolutely asinine something.

No one wetting their pants over names and statues has any idea who any of these historical figures are. Living between Charlottesville and Richmond, I've been in the heart of this stupidity. The ignorant are being used to rewrite/eradicate history.

First shots? First major shots yes, but lest we forget the dreaded John Brown and others like him who were busy killing slave owners and burning down their homes way before Fort Sumpter.
You’re only touting when the war was declared but are somehow oblivious of the murderous actions that were being taken by the armed abolitionists before the war.

Personally, I don’t give a dern about a war that ended in 1865 or who did what to whom at this point in time. I don’t mind talking about history but when that conversation is brought to the point of name calling, that’s where I draw the line.

For all you know, one of those so called “traitors” as you call them could have been kin to one of the members here.

The thing is, as it has been said, having a little information is indeed much more dangerous than having none at all.
In the case of the Civil War, there are very few actual students who study and have studied every aspect of what happened and the rest of those who think they know something just know enough skewed information to start calling people traitors and want to tear down statues.

One last itsy-bitsy bit of information:

Ft. Bragg was so named to honor what Gen. Bragg did in the Mexican/American War and had nothing to do with the Confederacy.
Heck, Bragg wasn’t even popular enough in the Confederacy to have a fort named after him but did lead to defeat the Mexicans which ended with the annexation of Texas BEFORE the Civil War.

Very sorry to have to disagree with you, Bobby, BUT Gen Braxton Bragg was HEAVILY involved in dozens and dozens of major battles during the Civil War. Among other posts, he commanded the Army of Mississippi. He commanded troops from the "western front" clear across the south to battles in the eastern seashore. As to what exactly caused someone to name Ft Bragg after him , perhaps we will never know.

Bobby, in regards to name calling. I hope you don't think I was calling anyone on Seniors Only, a name. I'd never do that. I was merely referring to those who fought against the United States . :)

I wrote that he wasn’t popular in the Civil War. I did NOT write that he wasn’t involved. In fact, it’s has been said in many papers I have read that his actions actually aided in the fall of the Confederacy.

And….what I also wrote is that the Fort that was to bear his name was so named to honor him for his actions during the Mexican American war for which the United States profited heavily both before and after Texas entered into the union.

Yes, I'm aware that you did not say he wasn't involved in the Civil War. All I was saying was that he was heavily involved in the Civil War.

As I said , in a previous post, we may never know the precise reason why a fort was named after him. BUT, whatever the reason, Bragg was, in fact, not only a General in the Confederacy, but also a slave owner of a Louisiana plantation.

No, I believe you didn’t mean to possibly besmirch anyone in a member’s family tree but how do you know that you didn’t?

All I’m getting at is that there are aspects of history regarding our own Civil War that both sides felt very patriotic about and the word traitor can be used from both sides and indeed was.
I may not like whole factions that destroy unity within a country but I have no ought agains individuals, particularly whose who fought in our own Civil War who were willing to give their life for what they believed in no matter which side they fought on.

No…YOU may not know the reason but I wrote the reason twice but you and many others are so hell bent to change history with so much virtue signaling that the country is being split up even more than it was during the Civil War.

Hells bells. If you’re so much against slavery, why do you live in a country whose main export is drugs and the trafficking of human beings?

In any event, the renaming of military bases will continue. I believe Ft. Pork in Louisiana is next.
This is just a part of a larger plan to remove the names of all military bases, remove statues and plaques that serve to celebrate confederate soldiers.

Times change whether some like it or not. Kinda reminds me that not long ago, plaques of the Ten Commandments were taken down in schools and many, but not all gov't owned buildings.
