A few days ago I moved an Iznik cucumber plant from an Aerogarden to a grow bag on the patio. It was doing great out there, about a foot tall and gorgeous green leaves; putting out its first tendrils. So I went out to water this morning and it had been totally decimated by some stupid animal. All that's left of it is a nub of the stem. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Our garden is starting to recover from the cold rainy June. July was better, but not hot by others standards. We have leafhoppers in one greenhouse, and I have not seen those since we moved here decades ago. I don't know where they came from as all the plants there were raised from seed. Tomatoes are slow, but we are getting a fair number of cherry tomatoes. The peppers appear to be doing very well--a surprise considering the tomatoes and cucumbers are behind schedule. All the pepper plants are loaded. Zucchini are doing fairly well considering and the cabbage is coming along. Broccoli, traditionally one of our best crops is forming small heads instead of the large ones we usually have, and the cauliflower is just starting to form heads. The dill this year appears to be the best we have ever had, especially in Alaska and fennel, onions and garlic are doing quite well also. We will be leaving to head to the Seattle area to await the arrival of grandchild number 17 in a few days, so the stuff will probably all get ripe while we are gone. If the new granddaughter arrives safe and well, it will be worth every veggie.
@Don Alaska - we have so many cherry and small beefsteak tomatoes, you can have some of ours..ruining outta me ears with tomatoes
For years I been a braggin' about prepping and growing my own food and weeds. Tonite I am still putting up beans. Last nite and this morning it was beets and I can't find enough recipes for peaches. I waited so long for a good peach harvest and now I am not sure I want it or any other vegetative matter! I think I am either getting lazy or old. The broccoli and cauliflower are lovely though. Few bugs. I am afraid of when the tomatoes ripen. But his year I will dry as many of them as I can. so it won't be so bad. Fall seems early this year.
Wish we had some of your problems. Don't know how things are going now as they are in the hands of the house sitter.
I remember that you said you would be doing that, but I have forgotten where you were going to and for how long, @Don Alaska ?
