Just saw...the state where I live has 55 colleges. Do you know how many colleges or universities there are where you !ive?
Virginia has 48. William and Mary was founded in 1693. Two others were founded in the 1700s. Five of them are Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs.)
Watching the sports segments of local news I see high school sporting facilities that rival the best colleges. The one I saw lately had an indoor Olympic swimming pool with lanes for competitions between swimmers. The football stadiums have gotten AstroTurf. Back in my day, each town had its own individual schools and with the limited tax base, there was not enough money for expensive frills, but eventually, school districts became the norm and Taj Mahal facilities were constructed with stadiums, swimming pools and modern classrooms. All we had was a football field with grass. The basketball team played at a neighboring school. Poor us. All we had to focus on was academics and getting a useful education. Your experience?
A good education is the last things the "educational system" wants. They are indoctrination centers now, with little thought toward an education.
I went to a Consolidated school. IOW, Grade School, Jr. High and High School all in the same building, separated by long hallways. Two Townships in northeastern Indiana. Had all sports except football. Track, basketball, baseball and golf. We also had 4-H and FFA. Schools have become much more modernized today compared to the mid/late 60's.
Our schools in this rural county were old & antiquated. Then we had a massive earthquake in 2011. A couple of them had to be torn down, and were rebuilt to modern standards. I think that the schools we all went to were highly modern compared to log cabin schoolrooms with dirt floors, but I understand the head-scratching at the near-professional sports facilities. I think there are part of this country where sports eclipses academics in public schools and in the public's minds. After all, I don't recall parents conspiring to commit murder over spelling bees or science fairs.
Good afternoon to all- Mr. Alaska- With all due respect to you, the public education systems of our country are not "indoctrination centers" in any form or way. The public schools take a very wide range of students with a very wide range of abilities and try to meet their individual needs as much as possible. The public schools are held to a high standard of student achievement by both state and federal laws, and there is simply no time for "indoctrination" The public school deal with a wider range of student abilities and motivations than any system elsewhere on earth, and while there are failures and less than perfect end of line results, it's because so many kids come to school so far behind compared to other kids who have better home lives and better upbringing. The best way I can put is a quote from one of my principals who said, "The school is just a mirror of the society it serves." The schools don't make kids mean or academically behind or socially unfit. They come to us that way, and we do our best to help them. And again, the public schools don't have time for any sort of "indoctrination" That's a silly and inaccurate assessment. you all be safe and keep well- Ed
Good afternoon to all- Mr. Alaska- Indeed, I do have grandchildren in the public school system and I do have children in the system- as teachers. If I could suggest something to those who think the public schools are somehow " indoctrinating" the students there- go and volunteer in your local school and spend some time actually seeing what happens in the public schools. Don't make your opinion based on something you see online or in some anti-public school organization. Go and see what is really going on. You won't find perfection there. You will find things that need to be changed. And you will find people- both teachers and students- who are working hard to make things better. But it really helps to make a good judgement about a topic if some real and actual experience and information is used- not some kind of propaganda presented by some source with an ax to grind I never said and never will say our public schools are perfect- we're talking about a human institution here, so mistakes will be made- but go and see for yourself what happens in the public schools today. you all be safe and keep well- Ed
@Ed Marsh , I have friends who are teachers. They are marking off the days until they can retire. Are your children doing that?
I think they look for a project that calls for a large sum of money, then they donate some to that and put the rest of the money in their pockets. Thats just my thoughts not proven fact.
Ed I think what most of us mean is that the DOE has gotten very political, and most members vote 80 to 90% democrat. Or that is the rumor, that teachers unions always vote democrat, I don't know. Also, schools in past 50 years seem to push victimhood and socialism. I can remember history before much of the facts were removed. Now there are many half-truths and lies on children who will be the future generation. Many books were written by explores, who tell different story about our history.
My old high school has been torn down. Remember the good old days when kids had PE/gym classes to help keep them from turning into tubs of lard? I guess those have been replaced by sensitivity training.
