I believe it started quite some time ago. While people don't want to hear it, Carter was a policy outsider who faced much sabotage from within by a partisan machine very much as Trump did decades later. The Democrats were already changed by the time of Chicago '68. Many people stuck with party identity and the media mechanism kept on refining its filtering, concocting, and selectively promoting information. As a result people now cling to their team jersey colors and drink the only flavor of the Kool-Aid they have a taste for. Their narrow universe of real and virtual experience has become largely self-reinforcing with the media just slapping the wheel to keep the momentum up. In the "D" case this makes Biden palatable if not downright Presidential. But be warned: the "R" case isn't secure and superior either. The allegiances of power centers including many self-sorting population segments are realigning among the two parties. Some are finding themselves out in the cold too, which might lead to a more explosive independent coalition than we've had in the past. They have enough swag in votes, money, and influence to dicker for what they want in exchange for the political power they wield.
I agree with every word @Jacob Petersheim and it's also the history repeating itself since the beginning of time. When the "love of money" replaces the "love of God, Family and Country" this is what happens. Who actually didn't see this coming? Maybe those that simply don't pay any attention to history, or even believe it if they do. That would be mostly our young ones not being taught. Some are so clueless they can't tell you who the president even is.
