There are a number of clips on U tube of Americans reacting to this song. In this clip the mother does not get it, the daughter does just watch her eyes. Song is from 1970.
I remember the first ' Lola ' I ever saw was in early 1970s.walking around downtown Atlanta. My friend and I were looking in bars for our husbands. Unaware we walked into a gay bar and a ' woman ' walked up to us talking. We were both PG aka pregnant at the time. Brenda looked at me and said we are not in a regular, bar she has a male sex organ, only she didn't call it that. I like the Kinks, they sing one of my favorite political songs.
"Well I'm not the world's most masculine man But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man And so is Lola" How can you not get that???
Originally that song couldn't be played on the BBC, not because of the subject matter but because it mentioned "Coca-Cola". No "product placement" in songs was allowed". When the Kinks changed it to "cherry cola" for the BBC, it was played widely.
