I remember Mr. Ed but my favorite show when I was little was Bewitched. Even though twitching my nose didn't work for me I still loved how it worked for Samantha. Bewitched was magical. A show that inspired dreams of what life could be like. My husband and I still watch it this day.
Yes! I used to like watching it after school. Plus it was on a retro station recently. Did you know Alan Young is still alive- 96 yrs old!!! Not sure if I had one favorite sitcom- I liked many of them.
Back in the mid 1950's, when we finally got a TV, my dad controlled what we watched. That show was one of his picks. So was "I love Lucy", "Lawrence Welk" and other like shows. I did a LOT of reading back then.
In the days before tv we went to the movies. Abbott and Costello movies were a favorite as well as Martin and Lewis. Before Mr. Ed came along there was Francis the talking mule.
Francis the Talking Mule was one of my favorites, too, @Sheldon Scott ! I remember when they thought he was a girl mule and they sent him to the WAC's. All of the shows he was in were great, at least to my little girl mind. Or maybe they didn't think he was a girl, it was because of his owner. I just watched the trailer for the movie. All these years I have thought it was because his name was "Francis" and they thought it was "Frances" the way it is spelled for girls.
I guess my favorite comedy when I was a kid was Gilligans Island. Of course the old Andy of Mayberry show we used to watch too, but the ones that were really funny, were on when I was pretty young, but I have seen them all in reruns. The Munsters and the Addams Family were all classic shows I used to watch. They were great. I liked them both.
I'll do ya one up on Mister Ed -- no, make that two up: 1) I saved, from my childhood toys lingering about in my dearly departed mom's attic, my original Mister Ed talking puppet. His face is rubber-like, his body plush. On the back of his neck is a voice-box, out of which one call pull a plastic ring and let it go to hear a short phrase as "Ohhhh! Willlburrrrr!" 2) I met Wilbur -- that is, Alan Young -- and Connie Hines (Mrs. Post) at an autograph show many years ago. Both were as sharp and bright and delightful as I could ever have hoped. Oh, sorry -- you asked what was my favorite comedy as a youngster? Sorry I got off-track (pun intended!) with Mister Ed. I would have to say, first and always, I Love Lucy, then The Brady Bunch, and then everything Norman Lear ever produced. Oh, my, I am really dating myself!

Well this thread is bringing back some memories. I vaguely remember Mr Ed and Francis the Talking Mule. I definitely watched Bewitched, that was one of my favorites, and we all watched Gilligan's Island, as well. I really enjoyed Mayberry and Happy Days, also. I have vague recollections of watching Captain Kangaroo, but I don't remember the characters well. My mom wouldn't let us watch Romper Room, because the show drove her nuts, she thought it babied the kids too much.
