This may have merit, or it may be ridiculous: preparing for the possibility of an armed attack, but not in self-defensive ways.

"It’s the first weekend since school began here in central Virginia, and approximately 10 children and 15 adults are spending their Saturday in a 900-square foot room with bright yellow walls and foam floor tiles, learning how to survive an active-shooter situation.

“We’re going to have some loud noises,” Sidney Burns, the owner of COBRA Self Defense Virginia, warns the attendees two minutes into the class. A moment later, an instructor behind the wall in the back of the training room simulates the sound of an assault rifle with an Airsoft gun. Another instructor lets out a loud shriek. Several of the students sink lower into their metal folding chairs.

“It’s unsettling, right?” Burns says to the class. “The screaming, the gunfire.”

Over the course of the next 90 minutes, Burns, a muscular 51-year-old with more than 20 years of martial arts and self-defense teaching experience, provides tactical tips on surviving a run-in with a gunman. Among his advice: Crouch low to make yourself a smaller target. Silence your cellphone to avoid alerting a shooter to your location. Cover your stomach and chest with hard objects to shield your vital organs. Make use of the time it takes a shooter to reload their weapon. Form a “stack team” of people willing to charge the shooter in case they enter the room where you’re hiding. Ensure that children understand to keep running should their parent or teacher fall wounded."

When I was a child, "air raid drills" were routinely practiced in American schools during the Cold War era where we practiced ducking and covering against walls or under our desks in the event of the Soviets dropping an atomic bomb on us. After the Columbine school massacre and the numerous abominations which followed it, once open schools began to fortify as the unthinkable became the new normal. The message that we're sending children is that we can't guarantee their safety, but we'll teach you some survival skills for an active shooter situation. I think that I was better off fearing the bomb, and of course the school bullies...

I was 8 in 1950, the Cold War surely underway, but do not recall much done regarding taking cover in school. Possible I've forgotten it. The "experts" today are saying we are experiencing an "epidemic" of mass-shooting mania in America, but I don't believe that.

"Mass shootings are incidents involving multiple victims of firearm-related violence. The precise inclusion criteria are disputed, and there is no broadly accepted definition.

As of July 31, 2019, 248 mass shootings have occurred in 2019 that fit the inclusion criteria of this article. This averages out to 1.2 shootings per day. In these shootings, 979 people were injured and 246 died (for a total of 1,325 victims)"

"There are many definitions of a mass shooting. Listed roughly from broad to specific:
    • Stanford University MSA Data Project: three or more shot in one incident, excluding the perpetrators, at one location, at roughly the same time, excluding organized crime, as well as gang-related and drug-related shootings.[8]
    • Mass Shooting Tracker: four or more shot in one incident, at one location, at roughly the same time.[7]
    • Gun Violence Archive/Vox: four or more shot in one incident, excluding the perpetrators, at one location, at roughly the same time.[4][9]
    • Mother Jones: three or more shot and killed in one incident, excluding the perpetrators, at a public place.[6]
    • The Washington Post: four or more shot and killed in one incident, excluding the perpetrators, at a public place.[5]
    • ABC News/FBI: four or more shot and killed in one incident, excluding the perpetrators, at one location, at roughly the same time.[10]
    • Congressional Research Service: four or more shot and killed in one incident, excluding the perpetrators, at a public place, excluding gang-related killings and those done with a profit-motive.

IMO, here's what's wrong with these accumulated definitions: They include domestically-motivated shootings as well as suicides. Guy catches his wife in-flagrante with someone, shoots them; this is considered a "mass-shooting" by many reckonings, if for no other reason to stir up the masses.

Our church has drills and a security team in place, we have a monthly range and other class and building training and match also all with training by and with local law enforcement members, just trying to be prepared is all should ever be needed with the amount of officers in our membership and concerned civilians we have there are lots of trained eyes always looking. We have LTC classes for members and shooting groups there also, with monthly matches and youth & family classes. Over 800 have been through our classes since we started them. Everyone whom applies is given a very through background check, very through. Using our officer members, just 1 negative anything and no go, all explained in advance to all. Some groups the waiting list to join is over 2 years back logged due to interest, absolutely ZERO negative anything allowed ZERO! We had 1 guest of a member make a negative firearm comment and the guest, family and all were told to leave and told why, they signed a release agreeing to all prior to joining. We have no room for that. ALL held accountable.

I suppose ALL of us should consider being informed on the subject. There are lots of good videos on YouTube from various sources and at a variety of lengths. The information could save your life one day.
