Back in the late '40's or early '50's my cousins and I would sometimes get these paper covered chocolate cigarettes. One Saturday afternoon my cousins and i were at our grandparents, playing in the house because of rain. Gramps was listening to a ball game on his old Philco. He got up to get another beer (he didn't trust us kids to get him one). While he was gone, we planted a few chocolate cigarettes in his pack, which he left on his chair. When he returned with his beer, he tried to light one. The chocolate inside started melting and ran down his shirt front. Granny made us play on the front porch until the rain stopped.
LOL..Ike... Yes I remember chocolate and also candy cigarettes very well, ( remember liquorice pipes too with red candy sprinkles on the end of the bowl to simulate a lighted end)? in fact they are still available to buy in specialist retro sweet shops here...
I don't remember chocolate ones, but the candy ones were pretty common. They were maybe a peppermint taste or something. I don't remember for sure, but I liked them. You can still buy them, but they're not in every grocery store like they used to be.
I remember candy cigarettes; but they were more like the peppermint ones that @Ken Anderson mentioned he remembers. They were hard white candy, with a red tip to make it look like they were lit up. Not sure about the bubble gum cigars; but I think that I remember those , too. I never liked candy (except for chocolates.......yum !); so I didn't really pay much attention to the different kinds of candy when I was a kid. The cigarettes were fun of course, because smoking was acceptable back then, and kids could pretend they were smoking and no one was upset by that.
That's hilarious Joe. I never lit them on fire but I did blow on one end which would briefly send out a little puff of sugar powder because they were sugar wrapped in paper. Did anyone else do that? Do they still sell them?? She had them in the video so they must.
Do a search on "candy cigarettes" on Amazon.com and you'll find candy cigarettes, bubble gum cigars, and other options.
I remember both the chocolate and candy cigarettes. I must confess, when I was quitting smoking several years back, I ordered at least one case of candy cigarettes off Amazon, to get me through, prior to breaking the hand to mouth satisfaction association. I still love the candy cigarettes, and if I had money, i'd probably still be ordering them.
I don't remember the chocolate cigarette. What we had was the candy cigarettes when I was a girl. Unfortunately, we were forbidden to buy that because girls do not smoke (the society is somewhat restrictive at the time). It's actually not candy but something sweet that is chewable. My brothers would always buy that and me and my sisters would ask for some. Naturally, I would play with it before eating. But whenever my mother would see me smoking that candy cigarette, I would be scolded.
