We should keep an eye out for this.

I'm hearing a lot of discussion that it is being framed as "friendly" to the views and goals of very different groups. Expect fewer cautionary tales in film and more presentation in the background as some sort of constituent of a civil society and even a future utopia.

Jacob, did you watch this series? Reminds me of the subject you want to discuss.

Besides watching the video, can you explain what they mean by digital ID , @Jacob Petersheim ? Is the the same as that new one called RFID, or something like that ? My daughter was talking about it the other day. She had to update her passport so she can get back to the Netherlands after her vacation here, and she said she was hoping to do the RFID at the same time, but not sure she will be able to.
It is the one people will need to travel anywhere by air, but she said not for bus or train.

RFID is a technology, like the chip embedded in most credit cards for "tap to pay." Some forms work at longer distances, like 3 to 10 feet. RFID gets used for lots of things including warehouse crates and boxes allowing inventory taking to be done more easily.

This "digital ID" thing seems to be more of a dossier on you somewhere in the cloud. It gets linked to the information on your Driver's License, passport, etc. as well as family and associates, residence history, movements and travel, biometric measurements (fingerprints, face, height, derned near anything) and your phone(s), law enforcement record, voting record, credit report, purchase history, search history, user IDs, and social media accounts.

I should add that a part of this is eliminating as many physical "ID cards" as possible. License, credit & debit cards, and on and on... all on your phone.

Eliminating cash is bundled in this as well.

I guess I left out my entire point:

I haven't seen more on this since maybe a year ago when it was very topical. Things went silent, but just in the last few days I'm seeing it discussed again.

So I was wondering whether there is something related to the issue being pushed before new people come into office next month? Or something in place that soon takes effect?

A "Real ID" will be required to travel anywhere by air beginning in 2025--April or May I think. I think that is what they are talking about. It can be done on your driver's license.

That is what my daughter was telling me about …… the Real ID. I remember her saying you have to have it to travel by air. She can get back to the Netherlands once she gets the updated passport back, but by next year, she will need the Real ID before she can come back home on vacation again.

I think you'll like it, all the actors in it do a great job, and the theme is good too.

I just used the 'tap to pay' last trip to store, cashier had to show me how its done.

@Jacob Petersheim , for comedy, this one was good for first 3 episodes, then it got 'radical' but it was comical for a while. We watched 4 different series, Person of Interest, Schitts Creek, Ice Road Truckers and Blue Bloods.

Real ID is a subset of the Enhanced Driver's License (EDL, also a version for non-driver IDs).

I've had an EDL for a decade. They work as a passport alternative for non-air travel to/from Mexico, Canada, and a number of Caribbean island nations.

I keep mine in a provided Faraday sleeve within my wallet. You can actually buy Faraday wallets these days as well.

So the RFID device allows quicker and remote reading (maybe 10 feet tops) if not shielded. The number returned is used to query databases for driver information, citizenship status, etc.

But who knows what else Homeland Security links to that ID number these days?

I worry more about these security breaches that are becoming more common, often by "foreign entities" that for all I know are acting on the behalf of domestic governments or even political parties.
