The actual Feast of Sharing here in Texas was started by HEB, which is a Texas based grocery chain. There is another event in Houston that takes place around Thanksgiving/Christmas, and it seems they want to get into the Guinness Book of World Records for feeding the most people at one time. The press is always playing up the event as 'anyone welcome' which is fine, as long as that's the way the event was intended. There are events in other cities/states as well, and probably in other countries (for Christmas/other holidays), and I like the ones especially that are intended to help those who wouldn't have any place to go otherwise, and/or wouldn't have a nice meal. Here's some information on the Feast of Sharing put on by HEB, in case anyone is interested in attending, or finding such an event in their area.
Over here, Christmas is intended to be a holiday for sharing. That is why gifts abound during this season - it is a jackpot period for the commercial establishments particularly those selling gift items. Since bonuses are given at that time of the year, majority of the people have money for buying gifts. Christmas trees are decorated not only with lights but also with wrapped gifts at the foot, ready for distribution on Christmas day.
Many local businesses accept food donations for the US Postal Service's mail carriers to pick up and deliver to distribution centers and shelters in time for Thanksgiving.
