    @Steve North
    One morning in Chicago, it was -23`F, and about half the cars would not start that I saw. Hoods up all over the place. In those days, no 12 volt ignition systems were yet in use in cars. That meant 6-volt starters had to draw humongously heavy current, 500 amperes or more. In comparison, 100 amperes may be effectively used to weld 1/4-inch thick steel plate with an arc welder.

    My Dad bought a '55 Mercury new; it still had 6-volt system. I "inherited" the car when a replacement was gotten, and used it to senior high during inclement weather. One late afternoon after classes, it was at least -20, but confident, I went out to the car. I had reasoned that gasoline cannot burn as liquid; only the vapor burns, so it made sense that very cold gasoline took a long time to vaporize in the intake system below the carburetor.

    I pumped the pedal a few times, to load the intake with raw liquid gasoline, then dutifully shivered on the cold Naugahyde seat. 5 minutes like eternity. Turned the key, and the starter barely grunted, but did turn ever so slowly, and in no more than one turn, it fired! Other guys asked me how I did it. I told them "nitromethane"!

    Frank...........
    I really hate to tell you but when the temperature drops down to -23f, I don't even plug in my car.. It must be at least a -20c before I plug it in and we very often get down to -40c and lower up here where I live..
    Of course the temperature is cold, but that darn wind will make things much worse.. The wind-chill is very often something else..
    Chicago isn't a warm place in winter, but I live way further north..
    It doesn't matter.......................... cold is cold !!!!!

    The border between Canada and the United States is officially known as the International Boundary. It is 5,525 miles long, including the 1,538 miles between Canada and Alaska. It’s the world’s longest unprotected border.

    Several Mississippi counties have two county seats. Traditionally, there was a white county seat and a black county seat.

    Do I recall Fresno correctly as being either right in, or very close to, that central valley which has literally miles upon miles of produce growing?

    We drove through Fresno only once, back in the late 1960s. Gosh, can it have been 50 years ago? Hard to comprehend!

    Yes, there's a lot of agriculture in Fresno...fruit trees, nut trees, olives, grapes mostly around me.

    Near my daughter it's mostly lettuce, artichokes, broccoli...more veggies. Strawberries in both areas.

    This is just what I see on an everyday basis. I'd have to look up exactly all that comes from Fresno and the Central Valley.
