Anybody recall the Cisco Kid on television? Leo Carillo was absolutely loveable as the wonderful sidekick, Pancho. He was undoubtedly better known than the big guy, Cisco Kid Duncan Renaldo. As they went about righting various wrongs, of a great variety of kinds, now and then one or the other would utter something sounding like an oath: "CARAMBA". Never learned that one. How about others, not necessarily Spanish? Like, my Dad's favorite "Alle Mordieu"! I learned later in life it was half French, half Czech! Something like, "My God!". Frank
Not sure if this falls in the category, but I use 'Far-Out !' to annoy my children. If their friends were around ( mostly when they were teens ) I'd say 'Groovy'! Nothing better than an eye-roll from a teen. Mission Accomplished.
I use them sarcastically too. Funny thing is, these were never things that I would have said in the sixties. I heard them used, but usually by people who were trying too hard.
I still say OH Rats, I guess I am in the minority. Another one, that you don't hear much anymore is Holy Smokes...but actually, I heard some celeb say it on TV the other day. I forget who it was. One that I really haven't heard for awhile is "What the Sam Hill?" My grandmother used that one from time to time, funny thing, she would never swear, but she thought nothing of disparaging other groups of people. I am just the opposite...
One I haven't used in years, " Hubba-hubba ". Maybe mutter it walking in the mall with the wife, to distract her from getting too interested in a pair of shoes. I told a fellow worker that the panel he just installed was 'Catty-Wumpus'. Got that look. He's Southern born, but had never heard that one.
What I say that drives others to distraction is, "Ya don't say". That works as a non comment in so many situations. Or how about, "da ya think so"?
I used to have fun with people who would respond to something you told them by saying "really"? Then I would put on my serious face and say, "yes, really, you think i'm lying"? Usually they would get all defensive, "I didn't mean it that way,--".
I say really...often...it is one of my stock phrases. Thank God, I finally got over the problem I used to have which was saying "you know." When ever there was a pause in the convo a "you know" would come out...however,,,you know, I haven't had that problem lately....you know. I finally got over it you know!
