Gambling bet collector is a job for seniors according to my father when I was young. During those days, illegal betting in horse races and illegal lotto were prevalent. Some in our neighborhood would be collecting bets that they will forward to the boss who is the gambling lord.

It may be a complicated system for you to understand but here's how it works. A bettor places a bet and wait for the result that is shown on tv. Instead of going to the legal off track betting station, the collector comes to the comfort of his home. Besides, the bettor only pays 90% of his bet as if getting a discount. That's the come on of the so called illegal bookies. Most bookies collectors are the old fogeys who try to earn their keep. And when the bettor wins, he also gives a tip to the collector.

It looks good at the outset. However, it is an illegal job and so many of those collectors have been arrested. Until now there are bookies collector but in a stealth manner only to escape the eyes of the cops.

Hmm I wonder how many bets those old guys collected. It doesn't really seem like a good job for a senior. However, I guess if it worked, it worked. I am not sure how effective it would be. However, I guess there would be worse ways to earn a living. :p Of course, there are bookies here, some of which are legal and some of which are not. I guess it depends on your state, and the rules accorded to betting and so forth. I don't know alot about that actually. I think most of it is illegal.

I don't know a lot about it either, since I've only bet for money at casinos, via the lottery, a few church lottos and office football squares purchases usually based on the Superbowl. Back home, it seemed there was more of this activity, although I have a feeling that it's very prevalent here in particular neighborhoods. I think a lot of the betting these days goes on via fantasy sports/leagues. I'm sure the governments look upon this type of transaction as a threat to their income, but I really don't care if a small segment of the population makes a few bucks in this manner, as long as it isn't mob-based and violent.

@Corie Henson This was called colloquially the "numbers games", operated clandestinely, more or less, in most large urban areas of the U.S. by gangland figures. I had no idea it was world-wide, but shouldn't be surprised. Their payouts were far more generous than the legal lottos now government-run.

It's not easy to stop the illegal gambling because the bettor and the collector are family or friends so it would be hard for the authorities to catch them red-handed. Much more now with the technology, the illegal betting is done by texting so it's nearly impossible to be caught. But I see those collectors in the olden times as having for livelihood that job. One collector was able to send his son to medical school, huh. What I'm talking about is the betting on horse racing. With the lotto, there is also a collector on the illegal side but all I hear is that you can choose 8 numbers (instead of the usual 6) so you have more chances of winning. However, the amount of jackpot is definitely lesser than the jackpot of the legal lotto.

@Corie Henson My problem with this, Corie, is that it is strictly illegal for "free" people to wager public gambling efforts, but just the opposite is true for the governing body which made it illegal. In fact, they encourage it, to subsidize their ridiculous spending habits.
